Beginners Guide to a Remap ??

Hey Guys.....

Could really do with some help, absolutely love my golf but as much as i try, some of the technical stuff you guys discuss is over my head.  All i know is a "remap" is going to make my car faster, therefore i want it!

I was wondering if you could maybe explain in brief what it involves, i have a couple of questions...

Cost?
Is it reversible?
What does it actually involve in simple terms?
How much will it affect my insurance?
What are the different types, and which is best (REVO? plus 'ive read about others) 
Where can i get it done?
My car has just over 70,000 miles on the clock, will the car be able to deal with the extra BHP?
Will i need to modify my car, ie better tyres? breaks?
Where can i get the remap done?
Realistically how much more power should i expect to see?

If i've missed anything i will add to this, any help would be great, i know there is lots of information on the forum but it would be handy to centralise it for people like me who don't quite understand it all....

How much will it affect my insurance - Depends on how old you are, i got a quote for modified car insurance for the first time this year and it was cheaper than the unmodified quote from my previous company.

What are the different types, and which is best (REVO? plus 'ive read about others)  - Custom Code, Revo, AMD to name a few, they are all very much the same, I have used AMD in Essex for my last two cars and been very happy.

Where can i get it done? Ask Google to find your nearest place.

Will i need to modify my car, ie better tyres? breaks? It's always a good idea to upgrade your brakes, always have good tyres(no budgets) and better suspension won't hurt. I have not done my breaks

REVO is based up in Daventry, quite a trek from Bristol, and i just got quoted £500 + (£100 vat) !!! 600..... that seems mad

£275 for their remap...all this is is a software upgrade, what do REVO do that is different?

Does anyone know anything about radical - remaps, if not can anyone recommend a remapping service cheaper than REVO?

I think Revo is just a brand of remap as it were.  The more experienced places will charge more, i guess it's like buying good wine and cheap wine, they all do the same things.  Normally when paying over £400 you are getting a custom remap, so they take your car out for a spin, tweak it a little then take it for another drive etc, they also rolling road it before and after so you can see what you are getting.  The cheaper options will be more generic and may not get optimal performance.

With regard to Radical I have no idea, just need to find a few people who have used them.

For a 140bhp, 40-45 is about normal from a custom tune.

an alternative to revo is superchips bluefin. it is on special offer at the moment and works very well

I've heard lots of good things about r-tech in hinckley, only about 2 hours away! I have just booked mine in for a stage 1 custom map inc rolling road etc, only £290

There are REVo dealers all over the country. Go on the REVO website and it will tell you where you can get it done.
Same for the other names aswell.

REVO are expensive, theres no doubting that.  Even APR who used to be equally expensive, have reduced the price of their remaps substantially.

There are plenty of other options that will save you plenty of dosh, and still offer very good gains.

I do believe i dont have a REVO map.......yet.  Still looking at other options though, 4 of which are on the list above
