Awfull sound playing through ipod after installing mdi
« on: January 01, 2012, 03:08:01 pm »
As title says i have installed an MDI and the sound quality is terriable. Cd and radio is fine its just when i play it through the ipod. I have read saying i have to change a few wires at the back as i orginally had a rcd300 and now have an rns510 but tried on many attempts but still couldnt work out how to do it.

Any help or is someone lives arounds the area (High Wycombe, LONDON) would be muh appreciated.

Was the RNS510 sounding ok before you installed the MDI or did you put it all in at the same time?? You need to do a pin swap for the aerial lead i think when changing to a RNS from the RCD300 but not clear if yours sounded fine before you tried the MDI?

Everything was playing fine and was good quality and still is, but when i play music through the ipod via the mdi it sounds awful. I have tried to pull a few pins out to swap them over but they wouldnt come out and i didnt want to break them and not sure what ones to swap.

Did you have the external 6 CD player before? If so, you need to swap pins 2 and 3 over. See link:

I'm in Uxbridge so not too far if you need a hand.

I was just thinking on the way in to work tonight, have you coded the MDI/RNS510 to the car?  I'm not sure if that would affect the sound though but might be worth a try

The rns510 has as kalu did this when he fitted my highline but the mdi hasnt and didnt realize it had to be. But im sure its something to do with the wires because i remember reading something about changing certain wires when you go from 2nd to 3rd generation radio.

That's only if you have the cd changer/ipod connection...the mdi should work fine on the rns510 if it doesn't sound right then you need to check all the connections are right and the earth are in the right place.

Is it a fact that if you have an existing 6cd changer you have to swap pins when fitting MDI?

I'm pretty sure my changer doesn't work with the RNS, though I didn't do anything differently when I installed it.

Mine is the same, quite poor quality from the iPod, but better with the iPhone 4  :sad1:

I've got the lead and downloaded the software to update the MDI to see if that helps, just not got round to it yet  :sad1:

I think the pins only need swapping if you change from a second gen stereo to a third gen one (eg. RCD500 to RNS510), as the pin outs for the earths have changed. Sort of makes sense in the links I posted above
