Fading Instrument panel screen
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:34:51 am »
Not sure what is happening with this, but here goes.

On my GT 170 DPF I have a mid line instrument panel (not high-line or basic) which displays outside temp, MPG, Distance time all that stuff, you know......the red text in the middle of the dash

However, sometimes when driving, it pulses and dark lines appear from left to right across this screen, causing half / some text to be darker (almost very faint to read) it pulses almost as though the car is low on battery, even though I am on the motorway or an A road and moving over 30 miles an hour ( it has done this whilst stationary too).

It goes dim then back to normal, lines of dark bands then back to normal, then as quickly as it starts, it bounces back to full intensity and back to normal until the next episode which could be days or weeks.

What the hell is causing this and should I be concerned? :scared:

Is it just the MFD that fluctuates with this dip, or any other power drops with headlights, radio etc?

If just the cluster dips, perhaps the screen is on its way out. You could try pulling out the clocks and ensure wiring is ok and plugged tightly in.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Ahhh, ok cool I have high line :)

And to answer the question before, no nothing else seems to suffer from this pulse, not the stereo, lights, everything else is find and dandy, just the instrument middle section with the mpg data and stuff.

Not sure if its the same issue but I've noticed mine doing very similar, the worst occasion was during summer and my mileage and trip display totally disappeared, the only thing different was the air con was on and it was a very warm day, turned the air con off and it gradually reappeared again. Has happened a couple of times since.
