GAP Insurance... Worth it???

Looking at taking GAP insurance through a delaer on my new purchase, is it worthwhile? Living in the area that i do, i can see the benefits. Is it available from elsewhere on a used car or does it have to be taken through the selling dealer.

Does anyone know the rough trade cost for the product, as its been offered at £349.

I've used a quotation from either www.click4gap.co.uk or www.directgap.co.uk to get the dealer to price match and then took it out via VW as the dealer claim terms are slightly better than the 3rd party suppliers, paid £100 for 3 years return to invoice cover with £10K claim limit for the ed30  :smiley:

Cheers guys, yes finally  :signLOL: Only taken me how many months, i shall spill when i have the keys in my hand hopefully in next few days, just awaiting V5 following plate transfer. Epic fail when i left the dealers, my car wouldnt start, had to back in and borrow a booster pack, cant wait to get rid of the 15 year old megane scenic  :ashamed:

Did you get an audi? Audi seem to be big fans of selling GAP insurance!  :happy2:

see if you can twist the salesman's arm into giving it to you for free. £349 is neither here nor there on a new car purchase, and he gets paid extra for selling it to you. when my parents bought their Merc a couple of years ago they threw it in for free without us even haggling with them

Never heard of them giving it away free at my place but it is worth it if you can get it at the right price.


I guess it depends how much they are making on the car in the first place to wether they can throw it in with the deal as they have to pay that money to the GAP provider.

Heard a few stories of people not taking it and then having crashing their cars or having them stolen.

IMO when buying new the gap insurance is a no brainer for what it actually costs vs the time span its active ie what it's breaks down to per week vs the piece of mind it gives you during that period regarding the initial purchase price of the car :smiley:

Not buying new im afraid, cant stretch that far. Im buying a used approved through a VW Dealership. I can appreciate the benefits of it, purely down to the area i live in, Bradford is a great place to own a car  :signLOL:

I just want to make sure i get the best value product and for the right price. They have offered return to invoice for £349 for 3 years.

Thats quite expensive imo. You can get it cheaper elsewhere which I would get a few quotes and go in armed with that.

Always think GAP is just playing on your fears.

Hey if you have an accident or car gets stolen your insurance will pay you enough money to get another car the same (after a bit of too and fro) but you wont lose out.

Only really comes into its own if you crash it in year two or three!  :laugh:

You have been looking for so long though Im hoping you wont be doing that!!! LOL In fact you have been looking for so long I have bought one, owned one and am now considering selling lol

If it helps give another view we haggled Gap insurance on the other half's new Honda Civic TDCi in early 2007.

When late 2007 she hit a JCB digger bucket in the outside lane of a dual carriage way at 80+ mph [wrong place wrong time] it was enough to total the car and write it off.
I think the insurance company gave her £13,000 pay out on a 8 month old £17,500 car. The gap covered the difference and she went and bought a nearly new Mk5 GT Sport 170 TD with the proceeds.

I think it's worth having, from our experience.
