How to Remove the Front Grille
« on: December 09, 2011, 09:57:51 am »
Hi all

Easy one for you:

I have a replacement (black) VW Centre badge for the front grille.  I don't want to snap out the existing one (and risk damaging anything) and want to remove the grille.

Am I correct in thinking there are 2 Torx screws to remove at the top?  I understand there are other screws to remove - but where are those?

Thanks!   :happy2:

They are just under the bottom of the numberplate plinth. You have to get right down on the ground and look up, they are at a slight angle.

Its an easy job. I did it last week.

All you need is a Philips screw (two screws under the number plate as mentioned above) and a T25 torx for the top two screws. There are also a few clips at the top, release these with a flat head screw driver. Then the grill pops out and the badge can be pushed out.

Good luck.

OK, so my badges finally arrived.

Before removing the grille I thought I would (opportunistically!) give the existing badge a light tug (counter clockwise), putting my forefinger and thumb between the 'V' and 'W'.  I immediately felt one of my clips pop out!  :surprised:  So I carried on gently wiggling until all clips released and I was able to remove the badge.

My replacement 'badge' was actually just a replacement cover!  So I had to carefully remove the chrome VW badge 'face' from the unit (for which I used flat-head screwdriver to undo all the clips).  This part of the job was a bit of an arse, but I managed to get it off in the end without damaging it too much.  I then fixed the black badge 'cover' in place of the chrome and put the badge back into the grill (point the 'V' at 10 o'clock and then rotate clockwise to upright position).

Did the trick...

I really should take some better pictures!  :ashamed:

By the way here is the link to the badges:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220897521003?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

The grille badge has a black gloss finish and I really like it!  I have seen others with a matt look but I prefer the glossy one.  Make up your own mind  :fighting:

Eurowagens do a black badge for the front which appears to be a complete unit, rather than just a 'cover'  - the link for that is: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Front-black-grill-badge-emblem-VW-Golf-5-MK5-GTI-Passat-Touran-Polo-9N3-/260873262956?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cbd42176c#ht_3705wt_1413 if that one takes your fancy more.

I now need to find some time to fit the boot badge but I expect that won't be as straightforward as the grille badge!  :scared:
