How do you know if your car has had its Cambelt service?
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:41:29 pm »
As above...

Chap selling the car has said there is no place on the service book where it could be recorded as in there is no box to tick.
He doesnt know if it has been done or not.
I guess if he bought it at 35k with three services and last service was from an indie its unlikely to have had it done??

whatcha think?

Cheers,

Oisin

Has it had all the work done at VW? If so ring them up tell them your thinking of servicing the car there even if your not, give them the reg and they should tell you everything they can about the car. That's what I did  :happy2:

he should have the invoice for it if he hasn't got it in the book. Can't remember if mine is marked up in the book and the book's in the car. You want some form of proof from him before you buy it other wise that's money to be knocked off.

I'm sure in the service book there is a box to tick under the additional jobs column, it says 'Toothed Belt', I'm assuming thats the same thing as a cam belt, I could be wrong though.

A lot depends on what the car is as the belt change is different for all. There's a 4 year time limit which is common across the range, but different mileage limits apply.

Then it's overdue on the 4 years, irrespective of mileage.

If he does not have any invoices i would be weary buying a expensive car from somebody who does not keep invoices for it.

He's only had it 5 months so if there's been no work done then no invoices will be relevant.

My VW service book has spaces for timing belt and tensioners. I phoned VW up in regard to my sons car and they confirmed his belt had been changed by them on a previous service. If in doubt chage it, had one snap before, once bitten twice shy.

yes but whoever he bought it from should have kept the invoices if they cared for it and passed them on to him. Basically no invoices = someone along the chain didn't care...  :stupid:

and for that reason people would advise a degree of weariness, doesn't mean it's bad, but it's not as good as it could be
