what the hell happened????

when driving home from work last night in my golf gti mk5 stage 1 (r tech) for no apparent reason my centre console panel went off and stayed off for the entire time.there was no information showing. ie milege ,clock,etc.even though the road was wet my esp kept kicking in even wiv mild acceleration which is odd and figured it had something to do with the computer going blank.once home i turned the car off and left it for 5 mins while the screen completely went out (just shining red panel screen) and then once i turned the ignition back on the screen came on as normal and all seems well again.its a 2005 plate mint condition golf which i never have had any problems with.anybody else had any similar issues or even have any ideas on what the hell happened.any info would be appreciated thanks

Electronics, eh! It seems it was a temper tantrum.  
Hopefully won't happen again.
Gone are the days when most things were mechanical, clunky and faintly logical.

I've not had electronic issues, but after going through a big puddle a few weeks back I had issues with what felt like traction control on relatively little acceleration, no light flashing but cut in power like tc cutting in. My car is dsg why did you as pdt do you have a theory?

its a manual gti.hasnt happened since and have been driving round all today and everything seems fine.just hoping that the issue doesnt rear its ugly head again else its gonna be a expensive trip to the stealers.

Same thing happened to me just before christmas, driving to work and the screen went completely blank lost mileage reading etc. Went into the office got the van keys and job sheet for day can't have been more than 5 minutes, went back to car just started to phone vw to book it in started up the car display back on! been fine (touch wood) ever since. My take on it is it was just a computer glitch no different than rebooting your computer/laptop when it crashes.

Mine has done this a couple of time since owning the car, only ever happens when it relativly cold outside, and as said above give it 5 mins and its fine.

My screen used to fade the longer I was driving, ended up just swapping it and it was fine.  Sounds different to your problem though.
