Voltage dropping?

I have a secret squirrel plan to install a few gadgets into the car, one of the things i want to do usually runs on a normal household 9v battery (the oblong type).

It's a device that is wired to a control box which holds the on off switch and the battery. Ideally what i want to do is install an on/off switch inside the ashtray to control it, but want to lose the 9v battery. Is there a way i can hard wire this to the car? maybe through the cigarette lighter? I would guess i would need to use some sort of inline fuse to protect it but there's tonnes of room under the ashtray area

any help appreciated  :innocent:

Does the device have to run on 9v? If so the first thing you will need to sort is a suitable adaptor (you might be able to find a car mobile phone charger to do the job).

I would then run a dedicated cig lighter socket rather than tapping off from the existing one, there are plently of ignition switched 12v live points spare in the fuse box  :happy2:

What power/wattage requirements does this "device" have??

mobile phone charger eh... there's a thought

i dont know the full spec until it arrives from Hong Kong other than it runs off of a 9v battery

The reason I suggested the mobile phone charger is because of the size of the multi voltage ones like that  :happy2:

nice idea that, but no... if this works/fails i will post it up but just need to sort out the drop...

need to splice more than one together too, guesing rather than needing 2 batteries they could draw current from the one although for only half the time? would it change the wiring to the car

i've got it solved now, also now worked out how to 'disappear' it when i don't want to see it by utilising one of the standard functions of the car and modifying it  :evilgrin:

all will be revealed soon enough, it's now taken its place in the list of 'to do's'
