K03 to K04
« on: January 07, 2012, 05:49:55 am »
my boggo standard 06 55 plate Mk5 GTi is going Stage 1 next month, but before I do this, I've been looking through some old threads, and I've noticed some of you talking about changing the standard K03 turbo to a K04. I've got a few questions:

Is this the turbo of the R and Cupra R?

Is it an easy swap, and what kit is needed to do it other than the turbo?

Would I need a remap as well?

Is it worth doing, or can the K03 be adapted now (I saw talk of not needing to do it,as there is now a hybrid?)

Are ED30's K03?

How much would it cost for the full conversion?

Forgive me if this has all been answered before, but the threads on this seem at least a year old, and I'm sure things have changed.

Ed 30's are KO4 and also have bigger injectors (i think).

And there is no need to change your turbo for a stage 1 remap...

Ko3's can easily handle a Stage 1.

I know my car can handle stage 1 with no other mods. I'm thinking that if I change the turbo, do I then need a remap, or will I have 265 bhp immediately, or is there a map that I would need to do as well? Or do I just follow the stages, and then change the turbo at the appropriate stage, whatever that would be?

Im not sure as to wether you get a gain in HP by just adding a bigger Turbo, you will certainly need a map to increase HP aswell as torque, depending on how far you going to take the car (Tuning wise) if your going to go towards the 270-300 HP route then it would be wise to fit the KO4 as it would be less likely to fail....

A bigger Turbo is more of a security measure if your adding horses hence why the ED 30 has the Ko4. (VW not taking any chances).

I've checked the Revo site, and apparently I can take my car to stage 2 with my K03 turbo, but if I want to go further, I will need to change the turbo to K04. That makes sense, as I may find I'm happy with the car at Stage 2 (Or Stage 1 for that matter, but knowing me, I doubt it!)

Still, one step at a time, there's plenty to do and spend to get to Stage 2!

Replacing the K03 with a K04 will include a relocating of the DV to work.
You can go K04 without changing injectors, i have assisted in doing that on an Eos which gave a result of 301 bhp and 450Nm (first Cat also having been removed)
Ideally you need S3/Cupra/ED30 injectors, a rebuilt HPFP that produces 130bar instead of 110bar, another intake and 3" aftermarket TBE and of course a remap utilizing these improvements.
That's about it really, now go get it done

Thanks for that Danish! DV = Diverter Valve I presume, but what's HPFP?

Would you get to stage 2 first, and then do the above, giving the engine a chance to get used to more power, or just get the whole lot done in one hit. Also, do you have any idea how much this would cost?

HPFP is the high pressure fuel pump located on the right side of the engine when looking at it from the front of the car.

As to how to go about doing it all, guess it depends on how deep your pockets are... a good TBE isnt going to be cheap, neither is a turbo, or the labour unless you're doing it yourself... I'd also consider a brake and suspension upgrade if you're wanting more power to make sure the handling is up to it

You can go to stage2 + with a ko3 turbo

You will need
1- intake system- itg or twin take etc
2- full turbo back exhaust- Milltek etc
3- auto tech or apr high pressure fuel pump
4- UPRATED revision d divert or valve
5- UPRATED intercooler - s3 or forge twintercooler
6- stage2+ mapping

This shoul be good for between 280bhp and 295bhp depending on which hardware/software you use ( and whose rollers it's mapped on) mine was stage2+ with amd and made 295bhp and 320ftlb torque

If you are thinking of going to a K04 setup I might know where there is a good low miles K04 Turbo and a set of S3 injectors
