2012 Summer Holiday - Egypt or Turkey?
« on: January 07, 2012, 04:21:02 pm »
Hi all,

Myself and my girlfriend are looking to book this years holiday soon. We've decided we want to go in early July and to either Egypt or Turkey, our budget is £800-£1000~.

We are looking for a 4 or 5 star hotel that's within walking distance of the beach but with plenty of activities close by. We are ideally looking for all inclusive, but may make an exception for Turkey.

I just wondered if anyone had been to either of these countries and if so what resorts or hotels they would recommend?

Thanks

George

Nearly everyone I've known who's gone to Egypt have come back ill or are ill on the 2nd week which has always put me off going but they normally go to Sharm El Sheikh or Nile cruises. Someone I worked with went to Hurghada which across the Red Sea to Sharm El Sheikh. Nearly all the hotels are 4* and up. He said there is enough to do there but its not the main tourist destination so not to busy. They also do alot of diving there amongst other things.

As for Turkey only ever heard good things apart from mid July to end of August where temperatures can hit 50c+ and you get burnt in the shade, lol.

First Choice only do all inclusive holidays now and from experience I've never had any trouble with them and they are part of TUI. Only ever heard bad things about Thomas Cook.

Get loads of hassle from locals in Turkey as well. Ive been to Icmeler and Marmaris. Icmeler was much quieter. Very nice area of Turkey, so many trees, didnt expect that. Went on a few day trips, one to Pammukale. Was great, but they try and flog you everything under the sun on the way. From £1000 rugs, Honey with viagra in it and everything else.

Would definitely visit Turkey again, but would choose somewhere less commercial.

I cant speak for Egypt. All i know is its great for diving, and thats about it, unless you are crazy for tombs and pyramids.

Thanks guys! This is really helping us, we also looked at olu deniz in Turkey but apparantly it's a quiet area without much going on, maybe worth a day trip though!

Keep the suggestions and comments coming

i went to egypt in 2010, stayed in Sharm El Sheikh, had a great holiday. people think its dodgy over there at the moment due to the recent protests and changes over there recently, but none of this affected the tourist areas, the tourist areas are one of the countries main sources income so them areas are fine. yeah the shop owners do hassle you when you go out, but that happens in nearly every country you go to.

the weather is great, we never seen a cloud for 2 weeks, we went in october and it was about 90 degrees, but in the summer months its much much hotter.

i would defo go back to egypt again, turkey has never appealed to me

I have been to Olu Deniz twice in the last 2 years and went to Egypt a few yrs ago.  Would never go back to Turkey but definatley will go to Turkey again.  Good echange rate I believe too for Turkey.

I have heard good reports about Kalkan in turkey too but I guess it depends on what you want out of the hol.

Skilab, can you read your post again? Was it Turkey or Egypt you wouldn't go back to?
