S3 Alloy hub modification
« on: January 08, 2012, 07:03:47 pm »
Right, as both DaveB has stated the TT alloy hubs allows for same BBK as the GTI steel hubs due to the TT hubs being same thickness as the steel GTI ones where the brakes is fitted to the hub.
The S3/Cupra alloy ones on the other hand is 16mm thicker as measured by both Fuscobal and I, meaning to utilize BBK kits that are to be fitted on the inside of the hub opposite to the standard fitment between the hub and disc.

My thought is: If the TT can withstand the brakeforces being alloy and same thickness as the GTI steel ones, is it possible to get the S3/Cupra Hubs machined down by 16mm and still be able to withstand the brakeforces???

The TTRS hubs seem to cope with the braking forces using 4 pots, 370mm discs and some are running 500+bhp now.  Cant see there being a problem with the TT hubs.

There must be a reason the S3 hubs have the thicker mounting points.  Would be good to see the S3 hubs next to the TT hubs for comparison.

When the TT hubs arrives from DaveB i'll take some shots of them along my "spare" set S3/Cupra hubs

Hi Jake

Got your Pm and all landed...

I think you'd be a brave man to machine them back, I'm it sure but I also think they're stamped with some Trademark or something to indicate they're a different material, I'll check tomorrow when I get them out for shipping.

it might be the case that they've added mass as opposed to thickness for some NVH issue that the TT just doesn't suffer from, the development proto cars are heavily instrumented for stuff like that, there was definetely something going on down there as they added the mass dampeners to the back of the S3 caliper but not the R32 ( some R32 calipers got them probably to supply issues)

The only way to answer the question is to test them to destruction, I had my initial benchmarking FMA testing done on a steel forged Leon cupra R OEM bracket which cost me £120 and THAT broke my heart never mind smashing up some Ali hubs.

That was done at Keighleylabs in Keighley.....the place is full off boffins and when not smashing my stuff up are stress testing wing ribs for Airbus....

Still it would be nice to be able to combine the S3 hubs with normal GTI BBK's

It is possible to have one bracket suitable for ally s3 and.steel gti hub, as mine are interchangeable between the two hubs.

I know you will.all be aware of this, just re stating known.facts!
