Exhaust warning light
« on: January 08, 2012, 08:40:03 pm »
Light came on today when I left the house this afternoon. Decided to leave the golf and take the wifes car out. When we came back I took the golf out for a run after reading some previous threads on here. Done some mixed driving on a 35 mile run. Light was still on when I got back. There was no obvious knocking, whizzing or blowing coming from the car even when idling. I checked the exhaust pipes and there was a distinct oily substance deposited collecting in both tail pipes. Although when i took it for a run this had burnt off. I let the car settle and checked the oil level and it was just over the MAX filler level. Now, I havent put any oil in the car since I bought it in August BUT got the car back from VW dealers this week, after having some s rusty arches sorted out. It seems to me theyve topped up the oil and over filled it slightly????

Exhaust light is often lambda sensor.

See if anyone is in your area with vcds to do a scan for you  :happy2:

Beer tokens are cheaper than the dealer scanning your car

Managed to get over to a VW dealer this arfo and after 2 minutes was able to tell me it was low fuel pressure causing the problem. Didnt charge me, all for 5 minutes work but got the car booked in Weds for a good going over. Hopefully, any work that needs doing will be covered by the warranty...we'll see Weds  :chicken: :scared:

So, had the fuel pump replaced this week, under extended warranty, but on returning the car it broke down so the dealers had it another day. Got the car back today and went for a drive to the petrol station to fuel up but on the way the engine would just cut out (no warning lights) when coming to a stop. Got to the petrol station....just but car wouldnt pull away and just cut out  sat there for half an hour, waited tried again and car started first time. let the engine tick over for a bit and drove away no probs. Will get the dealer to come and have a look on Friday. I searched for related problems on here and saw stealthwolf's problem with his fuel pump sensor. Hopefully they should find out.

So I drove the car this morning. Managed the 4 miles to town without problems. Drove back and as I was nearing the supermarket, i had loss of power - a bit like if the car stalls but there was no warning or anything. Just sudden loss of power. Managed to park in the supermarket carpark but required me to restart the ignition at least 4 times, cutting out after about 10 seconds if I use a lot of gas to move off or sooner if I don't

On a lighter note the stealers where I bought my car from are going to do my cambelt and water pump for free since they didnt do it when the car was less than a month away from hitting 4 years old.  :happy2:
