Golf GTi to Scirocco (Good Move???)

Had my MK5 GTI for three years now and I`m thinking of going for a change.
Like the look of Sciroccos but think they are pretty common now.
However I like the look of them,anyone gone from a Golf to Scirocco ?
If so what do you think ? Is it a worthwhile move?
I`m thinking of the 20TSI or the 2.0 170bhp desiel.
The thought of averaging 55mpg is sounding really good to me!!!!
Let me know what you all think of them ---hairdressers????

This is on my short list of next cars.

I don't think the Scirocco is hairdressery' at all IMO. It's in fact one of the few 'coupes' that I've looked at that houses two adults comfortably in the back, just like in the GTI. I've sat in the back of my car only really to clean it, but I'm always impressed how much leg room it has and how comfortable it is - much like the drivers seat 

I've shortlisted the 123d and 325d/330d but I've heard both of those are cramped in the back, although the boot space varies.

I didn't like the Scirocco when it came out in all honesty for around 6 months but having seen some tastefully modded, they've really grown on me.

Like you I'm looking at the 170 TDI too. With a Milltek and a map I'd like to think I could reach around 230hp and nearly 600 miles to a tank certainly adds to the appeal, or I probably wouldn't be looking at a diesel. It'll be my first derv as well   

GTI to Scirocco is a decent route so no reason not to as far as I can see 
I think two or three on here have done that exact change.

I'd definitely make that change. I had a MK6 GTD for nearly 4 weeks over Christmas and the engine is a peach, blending practicality and performance perfectly. It even sounds quite decent.

The 'rocco is an excellent coupe but I will always be biased towards a GTI.
There are 3 things that put me off buying a 'rocco.
(1) It's very thick A pillars which really impeded one's view especially for a townie like me
(2) The lack of 2 extra doors
(3) The look of the rear

When I sell the vRS the short list is an ED30 or a 170 Scirocco, probably the later due to age.  Loved them from the moment I laid eyes on it, only downside will be the boot space, but no many cars compare to the Octy in that respect!  IMO, go for it.

I knew I'd forgotten a fourth reason. Yes, the boot space is not great.
I had also considered a Golf R, but this has an even smaller boot than the 'rocco.  

Still, it's a beautiful car and a genuine 4 seat coupe.

Agree re. the A pillars and rear visibility. The majority of reviews say it's like looking through a letter box out the box when reversing, however lady sensors and a RVC could of course address that  

It took me while to take to the rear and I think it looks a little out of place on standard suspension, but when given a tasteful drop the wide rear comes into it's own adding to the meaty appearance. I think they certainly 'give off' a more masculine presence than a MK2 TT for example.

Same chassis as the MK6 Golf isn't it AFAIK, so the boot space should be MK5/MK6 capacity which is reasonable to be fair. I certainly always have room in mine for golf clubs/tools/mountain bike bits.

I've read seven or eight reviews on the Roc' and all the journalists have commented on it having a good boot space/rear legroom balance, unlike the others I mentioned earlier which don't get it quite right with the back seat comfort/space.

I've had my scirocco for three years now so if there's any day to day running question that i can help with feel free.

Of the things mentioned I've never had any problems with the view from the rear at all. The front pillars can obscure your view a little but you get used to looking 'round' them. Never found boot space an issue and with the seats down it's massive. Worse thing about the boot would be the high rear lip which can make loading and unloading heavy stuff a bit challenging.

I used to change my car every 6 - 12 months so the fact I've had the rocco for three years speaks volumes for me!

Cant see the Rocco offering anything over the Golf to be honest. Boot width doesnt make it very useable, visibility isnt as good and they are starting to date a little IMO

Golf GTD all the way if you are after the mpg

I would, cracking looking car, brilliant review from Autocar who have just done 12k  in one. They rate the 2.0 TFSI as the pick of the range. I'd say sod the fuel consumption (which is still good for a turbo-charged petrol), and go with that one.

I work for VW drive roccos everyday, nice car to drive but no were near a real GTI
Better suited to the 170 engine and used as a daily IMO every time I drive one I enjoy the feel but my Eddie is way ahead in terms of driving fun

Thanks for the replies guys. I`m guessing that mpg for the 20TSI will be about the same as the GTI.
From what I have read the TDI apparently gets about 55mpg which is 20 more than I get just now!!!
At the end of the day its down to cost,I`ve seen some 58 plate TSI for about £12k,which seems cheap.
Hopefully going to test a few in the next week or two.So will see how I feeel then

I went from owning a MK5 GTI to a Scirocco 2.0TSI when they first came out, but I changed back to a MK5 GTI (Ed30) within 8 weeks of picking the Rocco up, couldn't stand it.  

Didn't like the seating position or the roofline/doorline when seated in it, didn't like the rear end, didn't like the gap between the tyre and wheel arch, or even the fact that the brake calipers weren't painted red.

Hoped it would grow on me, but it just didn't.  Love my Ed30, which I've now had 3 years.
