Genuine VW Roof Bars Question
« on: January 15, 2012, 11:38:01 am »
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone knew the spacing between bars with the genuine VW roof bars. I'm planning on buying some for use with a roof box that needs between 550mm and 850mm but can't find much information about the VW roof bars.

Andrew the points are marked on the car similar to the jacking points

Take a measurement from them, give or take a couple mm you should be good  :happy2:

Really, on a MK5 GTI? I can't see any marks anywhere, either on the roof or inside the doors...

Theres a small black plastic cap in the door removable with a hex key

and as stated a small arrow inprinted in the rear doors

Just thinking you 3 or 5 door?

Mine is 5 door. I've found the hex cap at the front but literally can't see anything at the back. 850mm is quite a bit so I doubt the marks are that far apart?

Have a look at your front door roof ledge you will see a plastic bung, this is the locating hole for the front roof bar.

If you look very closely at your rear window glass, on the upper edge you will see two arrows pointing up like this ^    ^ about 3inches apart. 3door definitely have this but if you have a 5door it may have another locating hole like the front but I doubt that as I'm led to believe 3dr and 5dr bars are interchangeable.

Measuring from the front locating pin point to the middle of the two marked arrows will give you a rough idea of the gap. I would nip out with a tape measure as my bars are on my car for my board mount but I'm 3000miles away from it with work at the moment, sorry!

I'm planning on getting them off ebay and the auction ends in 2 hours. The car is covered in ice so if it's very small it's probably covered. Should be fine I hope!

Well I'm totally stumped by that. Had a very good look and there is literally no markings at all.

Right about 700mm give or take a bit

It's pi**ing down so only a quick measure

I can see why you can't find them could barely see them with a torch

It's actually easier to run your fingers along the sill and you can just feel the indents

There's two indents approx 10cm apart  HTH   :drinking:
