Internet Router in Loft
« on: January 16, 2012, 09:15:45 pm »
Hello.  :star:

Has anyone got their router in the loft? Im thinking of running a cable up (should be easy as the cable is half way there just needs extending and a power socket installing)

Whats wifi performance like? Should I? Shouldn't I?

Just thinking its one less thing to clutter the lounge.

Thanks in advance

Rich

Mine is closed away in a bedroom cupboard, along with my NAS, and wireless printer - so you can't see anything at all. I have no problems whatsoever. I don't think you will have any problems with it in the loft. In fact, a friend of mine has his router and servers in the loft - again no problems with wireless performance.

Yeah thats a good  idea, I've got a Apple Airport Express which will be in the lounge, so that should help signal.

The loft wont be practical when you ring your provider after losing your connection, and the nice Indian man called Dave asks you to go and stand in front of it, on one leg whilst winking and singing please work.  ( just a thought ).  :innocent:

True. :signLOL:

Im gonna whack it in the airing cupboard instead, its already got power in there too, and means I only have to make a ~2m extension on the existing cable  :happy2:

You only have to be able to turn it off and back on again for IT support.

I think i read somewhere that they don't recommend placing your router near any large metal objects; creates interference or blocks the signal - so you may have issues if you have a large hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard

Mine is in the loft, I have virgin - I extended the cable up there and use a Draytek N wireless router and it works great all around the house

virgin (if its cable broadband) will be fine.

virgin adsl will as all adsl lines will suffer from signal loss over an extension eventually (most of the time)
