ECON / AC Button
« on: January 17, 2012, 10:05:42 am »
Not a pressing issue, I'm just curious why some cars have one and some cars have the other...

My 2008 GTI has the AC button, whereas I've noticed on some pics that instead of saying 'AC' it says 'ECON' - my assumption is that this button has the opposite effect of the AC button on my car, i.e. when it is illuminated, the aircon is switched off.

Was it the earlier versions that had the ECON button?

Yep your right. Also some cars have a duel button, on late econ panels and all ac panels iirc, so instead of holding the econ button for 3seconds to make the passenger and drivers side the same you just push the dual button

You're right in that it reverses the operation.

I had ECON but my newer panel has AC, I prefer the latter personally!
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Apologies all new member with a GT TDI on an 04 plate. From the above am I right saying that when the ECON button is illuminated, then air con is switched OFF?? And when the button is not illuminated then the air con is in fact ON.

If this is the case then I've been driving with the air con on since October  :signLOL: :ashamed:

I'm sure I'll be corrected but i thought the car used the aircon even when heating, and that econ essentially used the outside air? Also aircon doesn't turn on under 3.5 degrees outside temp I believe

As far as I know the air con is always on but when the econ button is illuminated it turns down the power

I was also slightly confused with this at first but googled it to make sure.

The ECON button is silly really which is why they 'corrected' it in later models.

Aircon isn't just used to cool the air when temperatures are hot outside, you have to remember that the system is "air conditioning" so if your heating your car with Aircon on it is better quality air inside the vehicle then when just heating in econ mode. But if your not bothered about that and want to save a bit on fuel, have the econ button switched on!    :happy2:
