Fuel....Premium unleaded? or Standard unleaded?
« on: January 18, 2012, 12:03:45 pm »
Out of interest, does everyone use the premium unleaded fuel for their GTI's or do some people use standard unleaded??

I get a regular 370 on a tank full on long journeys and thats probably averaging around 90mph (obviously im in France and germany when doing this  :innocent:), on short fourneys i get around 315-325 and I always use either Optimax 98 or tesco Momentum 99 (im sure someone will correct me and say that Optimax is 99 Ron, but it used to be 98 and I have seen no evidence of it being 99, hope to be stood corrected!  :happy2:)

Shell don't sell Optimax in this country anymore. They sell V-Power which is 99RON

I don't use anything but V-Power and Momentum-99 in my car. That's what VW recommend for the 2.0T. You can use a minimum grade of 95RON but that's not really meant to be regular. i doubt it does any harm tho.

i get much better fuel mileage from Momentum over standard petrol, and better mileage still with V-Power over Momentum. no explanation for that one but it's been consistently repeatable 3 - 4% improvement in mileage with V-Power over Momentum. now my car gets V-Power, or Momentum when there's no V-Power nearby and i'm really in need of a fill up.

i mean just to put things into perspective, V-Power is about 7p per litre more expensive at my local Shell. so that's about £4.20 more expensive on a full tank. but i get better fuel mileage, so that difference probably more around the £2.50 mark and the car runs better. £2.50 per 300 - 350mi is neither here nor there tbh.

I just started using optimax, first few hours faced a few fuel cuts for some reason but then it seemed to get adapted to it, and damn after it felt quite abit faster, also the other day on a full tank on the motorway I achieved 300 miles to a tank while racing my friends gti so literally above 80 minimum and all the way too 130+ continuous throughout the journey, so it does feel like I get more MPGs out if it

You don't win any awards on here for talking about high speed driving at reckless speeds and racing, unless it is on the track!

you're right, it doesn't seem to say. when it was first released 99RON was plastered everywhere

on wikipedia (cached article because they're down in protest of SOPA today) it says it's 99 in the UK, tho it seems to vary in other countries which i didn't know

Put it this way;  I can't feel a difference in delivery/power between Tesco Momentum and V-Power, but I *can* feel a difference over 95 RON standard fuels.

I feel like the car runs better on the higher octane fuel (less mis-firing/stuttering) and does about 2-3mpg more.

I totally agree that car feels more "Punchy" on tesco 99 or V power (mine gets 2 tanks of momentum and 1 tank of V power, that pretty much covers 3 months motoring for me anyway  :happy2:, I do this as I get 5p off per litre at tesco with voucher so it makes financial sense, add to that tesco is only 1.5 mile away and nearest shell is 17 miles!!), I have never ran my ED30 on anything but V power or Momentum and will continue to do so.

I only use V-Power(which is a pain as my local Shell is being refurbished so have to drive 8 miles to get it...)

Works out it costs me about £190/year extra to run V-power... nothing in scheme of things...

In the fuel flap on my Gti it says use 98RON or above.

I stick to tesco 99 normally but been using V power for last few fill ups, i seem to be getting better mpg and seems to pull better.

Im on my first tank full of owning the ed30 dsg, its been filled with tesco 99, as i had a tesco points voucher and it was 4p per litre cheaper than v-power which is local to me. I only plan to use either tesco 99 or v-power if i can.

Worked it out based on a top estimate of 8k per year and it worked out at about £3 per week more over the year, but the i also forgot that i claim back my work expenses, so it really wont cost much to run the car  :P
