Oil Cap question
« on: January 22, 2012, 04:45:10 pm »
A friend went and looked at an Edition 30 that's for sale for me and he thought the oil cap looked a bit suspect.

Does this look normal to you guys?

Just been discussed in another thread. Perfectly normal on MK5 GTI engines.

Yeah mimes often like that, not quite as bad as that so maybe make some other checks but probably down to doing short journeys.

As long as no oil in coolant tank suggesting HG failure it's down to short journeys and cold weather

.
That stuff looks very like the gunk which an aftermarket catchtank collects. After 98k miles, many with a catchtank fitted, my oil cap underside is as clean as a whistle.

Yep... short journeys and cold weather makes sense to me  :happy2:

There was no trace when I bought it...nice sunny day last year and fine after the 350mile drive home, but all winter its looked like that.
I think an oil change and a catch can is next on order!  :drinking:

No problem whatsoever, mine does it as I only do 10 minutes to work and then back. I wiped the oil cap clean and went on a 120 mile round trip and it was clean afters still. They just need a good blast! :driver:

Cold weather and short journeys thus not giving the engine chance to get up to proper operating temperature is the cause of this. Mine's exactly the same!

I get the same on my S3 mate. As said, check the coolant tank and the dipstick. if it is in/on either then walk away.
