Stage 1 Vs Stage 2
« on: January 23, 2012, 08:35:41 am »
Hey Peeps,

Can some one tell me if its really worth the extra spend on going for a Stage 2 map,i currently have a Stage 1 and am looking at the pro's and con's of going to Stage 2...but from what im reading i would need to spend at least an extra £2000:00 for the engine upgrades aswell as bigger brakes and exhaust...

What im asking is there that much of a difference between stages 1 and 2 ?

Many thanks.

You don't need bigger brakes but it's nice to have. Stage 2 is filter and TB exhaust. Stage 2+ is high pressure fuel pump on top of that. It is said upgrading the inter cooler helps with ultimate power but isn't nessecary. It all depends whether you want to get every last pony out of the motor with how much you upgrade.

The biggest thing you will notice is extra torque going to stage 2 but really the fuel pump upgrade is needed to get full potential. If going to stage 2 you might as well aim for 2+.

I am stage 2 and all you need is a downpipe according to shark and superchips. Some say an intake aswell but it is not needed for stage 2. The brakes are more than enough to cope with the extra power unless you are going on the track with it. I just removed the precat from my oe downpipe and run a stage 2 file with no issues and im K03.

Oh i see,i was under the impression that the fuel pump and so on had to be upgraded aswell as an uprated Klutch.

But is there a massive difference in power ?

Stage 1 - 240ish

Stage 2 - 255ish

Stage 2+ - 270ish

i'm sill trying to decide if i should go straight to Stage 2+, but then i'd have to spend £1k on bolt on parts. at this rate i might as well have bought an S3 lol

I went from stage 1 straight to stage 2+ and you can definitely feel a big difference in the way the car accelerates, it just pulls alot harder all the way round the revs and doesn't seem to tail off like it did at stage 1...... i can't say whether its worth the cost over stage 2 as i skipped that but going from around 245 to 280 is like the change from standard to stage 1..... makes it feel like a new car again  :happy2:

I am going from stage 1 to stage 2 on 23rd February, the only requirement for that is a larger bore down pipe with either a sport or de-cat, I already have an Evoms intake which is a bonus but not essential.  In terms of cost, you may be lucky as I was and get hold of a second hand exhaust cheap, but budget for up to a £1000 for the down pipe and remap.

I've been in a cars back to back with stage 1 and 2 and I felt the difference was significant, although mine currently has a generic map and the other car was running fairly aggressive Revo software.  If you can wait I will give you a better opinion next month!

Another factor to consider is the clutch, are many stage 2 owners needing a new clutch?

I went from standard to stage 2 and within 1k miles needed a new clutch. Saying that the car has done 57K miles and was putting out added bhp and torque standard due to having a TBE, cold air intake, upgraded pulley, Intercooler to throttle body pipe.

I went from standard straight to stage 2+ and the difference is phenominal. My car sees off standard s3's no problem. Also took it out for a test drive after having it done and slipped the clutch after about 200yds.

are you just running TBE, CAI and HPFP or have you got a bigger intercooler as well?
