Brake Discs??
« on: January 24, 2012, 10:05:47 pm »
Looking at upgrading my brakes and not sure on what brakes discs to go for and have read a few reviews saying

Drilled discs crack due to vibrations of the holes

Groves in the disks tear alot of surface off the pads

So im in two minds on what ones to get. Anybody had any bad problems with theres discs?

i think you have to be giving your discs serious abuse to get them to crack. i think multiple track days or race car conditions. for road use they're perfectly fine

well, at least they're fine for top end Mercs, Astons, Porsches et al. means they're good enough for our humble hatchbacks

Drilled discs dont crack if they have been done correctly. Mine have suffered some abuse and are fine.

I have just upgraded my fronts to S3's, running OE discs and imo they are more than adequate, in fact they the put the 312mm OE Gti/vRS fronts to shame.  Upgrading on a GT assuming you have 288mm front discs will be mind blowing.......

So i take it was a good idea to upgrade and you notice the difference. I think i have 288mm but not sure but looking forward to seeing how much of a difference there is.

Drilled discs wont crack if you buy quality items. Drilled discs from ebay will probably crack.

Its all down to how much you pay.

The upgrade from OE 312mm on my vRS to 345mm S3 was the best thing (apart from remap) that I have down, I can let you know the difference between 288 and 312 as I will be upgrading swmbo's Golf imminently.

I wouldnt buy discs off ebay because i would trust ebay for that as good it is  :signLOL:

Well if you can notice it from going from 312mm discs i think i am in for a treat
I am not doing engine mods atm as it would kill my insurance as only being 20. But maybe in a year or 2

Would be good if you could. Im hoping to do mine in the next month or 2 as i have just a little left on my discs and pads.
