Ive got a gt tdi 57reg and its an amazing car, not as quick and as nice sounding as the gti thou :sad1:
I have had no major problems with mine so far had it for about 1year. Just had a major service done last week and all went well.
The 140 are better than the 170 and more reliable to remap etc.

Id say take it!!! if everything check out on it  :happy2:

I own the 140, 3 door on a 56 plate, my last average mileage worked out at 44 mpg (mixed) based on 430 miles which in this economic climate is a bonus.

I got swmbo a GT PD140 back in July and it's fantastic, now running an EGR delete and Shark remap so approx' 175bhp 300lb/ft.  I know find myself behind the wheel of that more than my vRS............45-50mpg average, and I don't hang about!  :happy2:  My advice would be to get the GT, but get it remapped asap!

Hows the turbo and clutch fair with remapped GT's?

As long as you don't push the turbo(get a reputable tuner to do the map)it will be fine, if the car is it good shape the clutch will be ok

I can only echo everyone else's comments.

Mine is a 140 GT TDi pre facelift mk5
My only regret. Not waiting to find a facelift one.

One of the only weak points with the 140 is the turbo, but that can go at 5k, or 105k remapped or not.  I factored the turbo going in to the purchase price so if the worse happens I can get a hybrid......

I heard that the turbo is weak on early versions, what years is exactly classed as "early"

2004 to 2006

Mines on a 56 so looks like mine is a weak point but still very tempted to get a map done by R-Tech
