The residual value will be far better on a genuine Ed30 than a fettled GTI though. My thinking is to look for one of the latter ED's on an 08 plate as I will most likely look to keep it for atleast 2-3 years.

There's more to having fun than going fast. Speed≠fun. It's how the car makes you feel when you're driving it. Lots of modern hot hatches would leave 50's era Ferraris in the dust. I'd still rather be behind the wheel of the Ferrari. Do what makes you feel happy.

I agree with you. I guess it depends If you plan to sell up anytime soon or not.

I like the Idea of having a car that is quicker than the untimate model

example, gti quicker than a mk5 ed30 & r32 etc

See what your saying Paradox. I would still look to modify the ED30 but when it comes to sell years down the line I would return it to standard to maximise the cars value. Still enjoying the GTI at the moment so I wont make any rash decisions.

Given we live in a world where 3200cc petrol engines probably will never ever be manufactured again by VW and certainly most other manufacturers, if you're in a position to run a car of that larger capacity nature with a brutal petrol soundtrack - then why not?

Everything in the current and future of motoring is rounded down, downsized, trimmed, synthesised & faked, greened, regenerated and hybrided - I smile when I see big engine petrols being driven daily because it's realistically becoming rarer and rarer on everyday roads.

Marks out a true car enthusiast, from the days when any old clueless Herbert would buy a high powered Golf not even knowing it's a 3.2 or a V6...

A lot of people comment on the flat feeling of a stock VR6 engine but from reading the reviews of stage 1 remaps online, they totally transform the power delivery of the engine so may be worth looking into that to help sway your opinion. Like many modern engines, a properly re-mapped car will drive totally different from a standard car.
