Separating calipers for refurbishment?
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:25:20 am »
Guys, just got a set of replacement rear calipers (thanks Monte) so I can get them powder coated to match the new S3 fronts, having a spare pair will save me being without the car for a couple of weeks!  Obviously the caliper needs dismantling for the sand blasting/powder coating but I am a bit stuck.  I have got the caliper to the stage pictured below but I'm not sure how to remove the piston (if it can be removed)?

Any advice would be gladly received.............. :popcornsoda:

Thanks, Lee.

Can't see the pics as i'm out an about with a carp signal.

But you will need a caliper rewind tool to take the piston out.

I got this from Halfrauds

Bollox!  I thought that would be the case, I have seen the laser one on egay for under 20 quid, off the top of your head is it a right or left hand wind?

I think it will be easier to give them to my mechanic.

Clockwise winds the piston in...
Anti-clockwise winds the piston out...

hope this helps!

Thanks Stu, is there just the one tool available then?  I only ask about the winding as I have seen a couple advertised and you have a choice of left or right handed winding???

This is the one I am looking at on the bay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390375863971&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en - I assume it will be correct.

Just before you take em to pieces are you happy about putting them back together properly?

There's a very large spring in there that  doesnt like blast media of any sort.

Are you leaving the handbrake mechanism in there? You taking it out, you go the long circlip pliers?

Might I sincerely suggest you get on the bay and buy yourself a rear caliper from a Mk4 1.9 SDI and have a practise

You got seal kits? You got piston seals?

Sorry to sound like a tw@t but they're abut four times as involved as fronts and have double the amount of elephant traps as the fronts too and you only find out when fluid is pissing out all over your lovely fresh powder coat.

That said PM me and I'll help all I can, here's some I delivered just yesterday

Bloody hell Dave, I wasn't aware of any of that, I was hoping to completely remove everything and just be left with the bear caliper, from the sound of it, it isn't really a DIY job??  Is it something a competent mechanic could do?

PM sent.....cheers Lee.

PM sent buddy, sorry to sound like a muppet but they can be tricky, that said everybody has to do their first one.

So just to be straight its not like a bloody Apollo mission but worthwhile getting some scrap calipers off the bay and having a play about with before bolting the good ones to your car!

So not rocket science just tricky

Cheers
