Ed30 to Polo GTi
« on: January 31, 2012, 07:23:27 pm »
Would I be mad to consider swapping my Ed30 for a polo gti?
White ed30, 08 plate, 29k miles for a 3k miles 61 plate polo with same options as my Ed but I'd need to find £6000.

I think £6000 to make that change is nuts, especially considering your GTI is pretty low mileage.

Madness , keep the Golf. In 2 years time you'll be able to do a straight swap i reckon. Save you 6k

I have a white Edition 30 and my wife has a white Polo GTI which I drive nearly every day as she doesn't use it for work and in our tandem garage the Polo is in front of my Ed30, so it's first out!

The Polo is an excellent car in every way and I really enjoy driving it, but when push comes to shove, I still prefer my Ed30.  For me, the Polo has a small car feel in comparison with the Golf (seats, interior and feel out on the road) and I do prefer the Ed30 engine.  The Ed30 feels more grown up and the engine feels/sounds less stressed when driven hard.  If we had to reduce back down to one car, the Ed30 would win for me, but not by much.

It will be interesting to read other people's responses to your question.

Thanks for the replies, I think apart from the lower mileage and running costs, there's not much else to warrant a £6k outlay.
Might just save up for the Polo R.....when is it due out???? Anyone?!

Still haven't heard anything about the Polo .:R yet. The rumour mill is that if it is produced it will be a FWD 1.6 Turbo with around 220bhp.

I loved my ED30 and love the Polo GTI. As you say, there isn't much in it, but for a day to day runabout the Polo has to win. If you need a decent size boot to go with it, then the ED30 has to stay. Simples. :happy2:
Golf R gone.

This engine is so much more lively below 100mph than a KO4 TFSI and that's where 99.9% of driving is conducted.  Evenon track there's not a huge advantage in the power

2nd/3rd/4th gear in my ed30 says that its lively enough.  :signLOL:

k04 can feel a bit laggy if you dont have it in the right gear, especially noticeable when your in 'D' in gear 2.

Personally i'd keep the Golf Ed30 as it's a limited edition and I think the ED30 GTI is the GTI to have, its the one I would look for :happy2:

If I was going to get a Polo i'd definetly wait for the R, if they make it that is

Cheers,
Ben

Thanks for the feedback chaps. It sorta confirms what I was thinking. And as was mentioned, you'd have to think the newer polo gti will only get closer to ed30 values.
The car in question had a potential customer this aft according to the dealer so I wished them well with it and asked them to let me know when/if they receive Polo R info (although the Internet appears to be quicker than main dealers with new model info)!

Update - I test drove a 61 plate ex-demo Polo GTi with 4000 miles today. The price difference has magically come down to around £3500.

So has that tipped the balance over to swapping??

My main concerns are with oil consumption in the 1.4 TSi engine and issues with the DSG mechatronics

Any more words of wisdom people?

No i wouldn't, i can only think that the 'newness' of the Polo is what's half tempting you as i don't doubt the Polo GTI's credentials but i simply wouldn't put it in the same bracket as an Ed30.
