RNS510 help please.

Hi Guys,

I'm a recent ED30 owner and I have just installed a RNS510 Version B

My car is an 07 plate ED30

The questions I have are:

1. How do I check to see if I have the correct Can Bus thing so my battery wont go flat

2. Can I update the unit so it will do full post codes?

3. Will it do iPod control and if so, which lead do I need

4. I have no clue how old the maps are in my unit, so how do i check and where can i get updated ones from.

I have had a search around and read loads of threads, but if I am being honest I find it all a bit confusing as I am so new to the VW fold.

Only way I know of canbus version is to scan the car with VCDS. Look on the register and see if there's anyone nearby.

Full postcodes require the latest maps - officially, you have to buy them from VW. Do not ask about illegally obtaining them on this forum.

iPod control varies - some go for MDI and others just go for the iPod kit. Either way, functionality and support tends to be limited. There's some good threads here if you search for them.

V7 maps are the ones that support full postcode. V8 are the latest version to be released.

OK, I got hold of a V7 maps disk and upgraded my RNS510. I just put the disk in while I was driving along and it seemed to update OK. At one stage I didn't know if it was doing anything, so I pressed eject and I got a message saying it was downloading and updating the maps, so do i really want to eject, so I pressed 'no' and it carried on. Some time later i pressed eject again and it ejected the CD and then there was a short message that said maps updating and that was that.

I checked which version of maps were installed using the hidden menu thing and it said V7.333 or something, deffo V7 though.

But when I try and enter a postcode in the destination it still only accepts the first 3 or 4 digits, before prompting me with the choices for the 5th digit. so it seems I still cant enter a full post code.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried turning the car off and removing the key and then restarting etc.

I did a bit of digging and it seems my version 1100 firmware also needs updating for 7 digit postcodes to work.

I found this link to updated firmware downloads and the links work.
