I just realised I should add that my long term 28 mpg is as displayed on "2" which I think is overall rather than trip - Is that correct? What's "1", on the fly as you drive?

^^^ The "1" trip computer seems to be automatically reset every day, i.e. each morning the avg mpg & distance travelled is 0.

I get ~24 mpg on my daily commute of 5 miles which can take up to 30 mins :(  On longer/motorway journeys I get ~35 mpg.  Overall average is usually ~28 mpg.

If the mk5 is the same as the mk4, then the "1" computer resets itself after 2 hours of the car being off. If you do lots of journeys with less than a 2 hour gap between them, it will accumulate. Clear as mud?  :rolleye:

I average 30mpg on a normal week but my journey to work is only 2 mile.  I find it a very economical car.

I had to do a 180 mile round trip to get my PNP amp the other day.  I was taking it easy, over took only a couple of cars on the country lanes and once on the motorway i set the cruise control to a gps verified 70mph

I took a pic which shows how little it had used after 72 mile and the fact that it had another 415 miles left in the tank.  487 mile range on a GTI

The average for the journey at this point was 42.8 mpg and it climbed to 43.2 by the end of the journey.

The pic

Both are 'on the fly'.

Number 1 - This shows all data for your current journey. It is reset only when the engine has been off for at least 2 hours.
Number 2 - This shows the total for as long as you dont reset it! These figures only rest when you reset it yourself, or when the time travelled reaches somet silly - I think its 999.99 hours.

So lets say you reset both sets of averages, before a 2 day break, for example.....

Day 1 - you travel 200 miles.
Day 2 - you travel 300 miles.

Number 1 data - will show you all the averages at the end of each day/journey. It will reset 2 hours after your journey on day 1, and 2 hours after the journey on day 2, and so on. So when you get in the car on day 2, all averages under this setting will be at 0.
Number 2 data - will show you averages for the complete 500 mile journey. Hence at the beginning of day 2, all data from day 1 is still there, and the computer adds day 2 data to it.

Both sets of averages are always changing in each journey - the only difference being the reset times.....

Phew! That post is much appreciated but in my case it goes somewhat above my head - I can't be arsed to work it all out.

My car runs well and when she gets down to about 60 miles worth of V-Power remaining, I buy just over 30 litres because it counts as a tankful and I then earn the maximum free V-Power over a period. That's all I'm bothered about.

:happy2:

Mine has recently got a lot more economical and my commute to work see's between 35 - 38mpg and a range of around 400 miles. Although my trip to Oulton Park this weekend saw around 25mpg!   (much more fun though!)

....Because Shell count a tankful as anything over 30 litres and because so many tankfuls per month result in reward (I only take fuel as a reward), the trick is not to fill right up. It requires a little bit more planning of fuel stops but has its benefits. 30 litres (I do 32-34) is approx three-quarters of our tanks. What you don't want to do is only manage to get 29 litres in on one session!

Whever I've seen over 32 mpg I've found the drive crushingly boring and I may as well have got a TDI.

Sadly commuting is boring as hell, so you may as well just sit back in D at 32mpg+ and save fuel for hooning!!

Yes, I'm very lucky as i don't have to commute except a 5-mile round-trip skool run. This week looks like a 30 mile max; Last week was just over 700 miles in the GTI plus a few more in a heavily modded Mk4 R32 with the windows down and a Milltek'd V6 which is quite the most glorious I have ever heard!
