Gt Sport 170 Economy
« on: February 08, 2012, 02:44:06 pm »
Hi need a bit of info pls,

According to the stats theres not much difference between the gt sport 170 and 140?

Just wondering what your opions are on either the 140 and 170 ave noticed that from 08 onwards the majority of 140s have DPF aswell!

If you had the DPF removed on the 170 then surely its a better car in terms of performance?

Also anyone have any ideas of town driving and related MPG values in the 170?

Thinking of going for the 170 TDI instead!

I've got the 140 Tdi.

Stop/Start traffic driving is usually 38 - 44

Motorway Driving is usually 46 - 50

A roads / rural driving 50 - 56

The 170 is only going to be marginally less than the 140 & having driven a 170 Scirocco, given the choice it'd be the 170 for me next time

DPF's can cause issues from what ive read and are expensive to replace so i'd have it removed!

I think whether u get a 140 or 170 from MY2008 chances are its gonna be DP BASTWARD F

So a delete is on the cards

Baring in mind you do a delete wud u definately choose the 170 over the 140? i assume the mpg drop is only goign to be 2-3 at most between the two

All the Mk5 Tdi's are PD's - they introduced the CR diesel to the MK6 golf  :happy2:

Mines an August 08 140 and didnt have the DPF fortunately - it was an optional extra on the 140's

But id still go for the 170 given the choice - there not miles apart performance wise tbh, but just nice to have that extra power and the 170 is more tunable if thats the route you want to go down.

Reason i went for the 140 was tax & insurance being cheaper. And you can remap the 140 to circa 185bhp.

The 170 also has uprated brakes and suspension over the 140?
Or did I dream that? :rolleye:

Hmmm, are 170 owners able to achieve 55mpg @ steady 70mph?

thinking i shoudl just stick to the 140 and remap it

The suspension is defo the same

Im not sure on the brakes though - the 140 is 280mm Front & 255mm Rears & i think the 170 could be 312mm Fronts & 255mm Rears - but im not 100% sure

Mine is a 170 and I have a daily commute is 6 miles each way and can be quite slow mostly town driving, at weekends it gets a good blast which may help in clearing it out. Not sure I can help much with your questions except to say in the 6 months of owning it I have yet to see the DPF light come on, kiss of death now. May be I am just lucky but I do give it some beans at every opportunity. Have not looked at my mpg recently but I think I average around 40 which I can't complain at based on my circumstances.
Given the choice I would go 170 everytime if you can afford it. The only thing I was concerned about was the DPF but so far these have proved unfounded.
Remap is on the cards for later this year and if the DPF causes any problems it will be taken out.

I have the GT 170 which also has the DPF but is being de-DPF'd in a month or so along with a remap and possibly an EGR delete.

As for economy my route to work is about 13 miles combining 30's, 40,s and national speed limit. I sit at these speed limits and I can consistently achieve 57-61mpg.

Motorway runs it will sit around the 45mpg doing 80mph with cruise on.

Get the 170.  I have the 140 and only went for that because of the dpf.  Didin't know you could remove them at the time.  I love my car but given the choice again i'd go 170.  Same suspension set up on both but as pointed out earlier the 170 has the 312mm brake set up.

I do a lot of city driving and I'm still averaging 46mpg.  Given the motorway its a real miser on juice

Only issue with the 170's is the injectors, but then again the 140's ain't trouble free either

I had an 07 GT 170 from new. I put 127,000 miles on it in a little over three years. It was the best Golf I have had as an everyday tool. In total let me down once with failed injector and needed replacment and loom. Also DPF light came on no less than 4 times and had sensor replaced each time........twice under warranty! Apart from tyres that it ate! Brilliant. Driven hard from up north to Essex for 4 hours late one night returned 42mpg! Driven like Miss Daisy I saw 57mpg and rising. Replaced with A3 quattro 170 which isn't nearly as quick because of the additional weight but engine basically the same and love the way they drive. Wouldn't hesitate to have another. Compared to our 04 Gt 140 performance wise like chalk and cheese but 140 returned on ave 3-5 mpg more. HTH  :happy2:
