Well I've had a go at repairing the bumper!
« on: February 11, 2012, 06:30:33 pm »
Hiya Guys

Well today I've been busy trying the repair the silly damage I caused to my front bumper.

This is what it looked like

So took the bumper strip off and sanded back the flaked paint

Then using Halfords paint I primed it

Then reflex silver

Then lacquer

I am happy with the finish but it is abit darker than the rest of the car. I did flatten the silver basecoat with 1200 wet & dry and water as it said on the cans. But I'm thinking that it would have been more silver if I hadn't. Some peeps say you should flaten back and some say you shouldn't so what do you guys think?

2004 GT TDI 2.0 (140bhp) - Mods so far - GTI pedals, GTI Interior Metal Strips, GTI Metal Ashtray, Gear Knob with metal surround, TPMS (with switch), RNS-510, Skoda bluetooth kit, Armrest MDI, VCDS owner (Bristol)

Looks like a really good job, the colour match on halfords paint isn't great if it really looks obvious try some better quality paint.

Reflex silver is metallic, so you shouldnt have flatted this. It could be the reason for the colour difference. Metallic paints shoudlnt be flatted before applying the laquer. Your finaly finishing should be in the laquer itself.

Thanks guys

Yeah i thought flattening the metallic seemed odd as the finish was good. Think i'll do it again without flattening the metallic  :happy2:
