brake servo advise needed asap please
« on: September 29, 2012, 10:25:18 pm »
hello, got my car a week ago and ever since i have noticed a noise coming from around the area of the air vent on the dash to the right of the stearing wheels,,, now this noise happens with or without the climate control on,,, it is like a hissing noise or an air blowing noise or could even be described as an air sucking noise.
the sound is there ALL THE TIME but goes away instantly when i touch the brake pedal and stays away until i take my foot off the pedal ???
i was in vw the other day and asked one of the mechanics to come out and listen to it ( didnt buy the car from there ) he told me that it could be the brake servo has a problem,,,, he says it is actually working fine by testing the brake pedal etc but his checks where only done by sitting in the drivers seat.
now my car is under warranty with another garage and i have booked it in to look at this but all they keep asking me is wether the brake servo is actually faulty or is it just making a noise ? as i may not be able to get anything done if it is just noisy.
the vw garage said it could be faulty as it should not make that kind of noise but without inspecting it properly they cant tell, but i was told by the service manager at vw that in all his time he has never seen a mk5 come in and needed this part changed ?
i did get vw to price the job and it came in at £563 with £250 of that being labour.
if anyone can offer any advise on this i would be very gratefull
thanks

Hey,

the same thing happened to me, I took out an external warrenty when I got my car just incase anything were to go wrong. Have owend my car for not very long, I noticed a hissing noise was coming from behind the break (again it went when I put my foot on the break pedal and returned again when I took it off). The garage that I took it to said it was leaking (I assume air) I am of the same opinion if something is not working as it should be then yes, it is faulty. So tell that garage to do one mate, it isnt meant to make a noise so it is faulty! Stand your ground and tell them to fix it!

I have exactly the same issue. Doesn't affect brake performance at all, but I suppose it should be looked at.

No problems, yeah let me know what they say mate. The garage replaced the whole brake servo at a cost similar to what you said VW have quoted... Sorted the noise right out and the breaks are more sensetive now, that could be used in your argument, say they seem to be less sensitive (if you think they do) because i noticed a big difference when they put the new servo in (if its meant to make a difference I don't know but I felt one)
