Looking at this tomorrow...
« on: February 12, 2012, 04:27:32 pm »
OK looking at this tomoz,, as I really want grey 3dr and it has the rear valance coded witch saves me a job, dealers claiming there's no wear to the d-seat bolster and that the car looks and drives like a 20k car, well we'll see
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201146429469632/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/5000/colour/grey/make/volkswagen/keywords/gti/radius/1500/
apart from the obvious visual things, panels orig-paint, rims tyres etc,

Just putting together a check list;
tax-mot
HPI clear
check dash lights are all present, ABS ESP Eng-management
check history is upto date ie, T-belt + w-pump change
check air-con is cold enough

read something about turbo dump valve can split causing turbo lag ??? any other thoughts welcome

Pull back carpets in boot and around rear lights and check for panels that have been repaired, from low rpm in 4th go full throttle and listen for a whistle ( will get woosh noise from turbo this is normal ) that would indicate DV valve.

Look for signs of arch rust, panel gaps, headlight and bumper/bonnet alignment. View the car indoors in the dry. Look for signs of paintwork by looking for any overspray and/or traces of white powder in door rubbers and door shuts from polishing.

Ask to see the logbook, get the name and address of previous owner from it and contact them, ask about the cars history.

The whistle is a sign of faulty DV. If you are not sure, ask them to change it, its only £40.

Its a buyers market at present, theres tons of mk5's out there, pick up on a few small things such as the low spec and bid him £6k, worh a try.

Noticed that car on their forecourt a couple of weeks ago when I was driving past on the way to a job at Duffield railway station.  It looked nice and clean although it's hard to tell how good it really is when driving past at 30mph!  I notice it's got a colour coded rear bumper.  Might that indicate either a previous enthusiast owner with an eye for such a modification or a non-standard repair perhaps ie not black plastic?
