GTI rear conversion silencer
« on: February 01, 2012, 09:23:19 am »
I have a MK5 Golf GT 140 and have purchased a GTI rear valance but need a rear silencer now, what have people used, the GTI back box or GT 170 back box? VW are quoting £260 for rear GT 170 back box. Any stainless steel alternatives or cheaper OE parts that people are aware of?

Once you get your GTI rear valance colour-coded to your car, fit it then drive to your local exhaust shop and they should be able to replace your diesel backbox with a straight thru pipe for about £150. Have a look at the link below. It should show my build thread, page 3. Halfway down I've put a few pictures of the pipe I got made up.

It doesn't affect your car at all with regards to lack of back-pressure of the exhaust and will actually make the turbo spool up a little quicker. There isn't a massive change in noise/volume to this mod, but you may hear the turbo spooling down now and then if you have the window down. A noise I quite like.

Hope that helps you.  :happy2:

I bought a genuine backbox on ebay (£50-100 - mine was £80 including delivery) and sent the pipe dimensions to an exhaust place on eBay who made a sleeve reducer for £11 delivered.

Got the grinder out and fitted it myself, easy.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)
