RNS 510 installation question

I'm buying an RNS 510 from a guy on here and I was hoping to get it posted to the dealer who I'm buying my Edition 30 from next Monday so that they could fit it for me.

I was under the impression that it was a 15 minute job but the dealer has replied with this...

"I have spoken to the guys in our workshop about the RNS 510, because the car has the standard aerial and not the sat nav one, it will not be compatible. The issue is with the wiring to pick up the signal. If a new aerial was connected and the wiring done throughout the car, it would be possible. But this is far more than a 15 minute job. Several hours in fact."

Is that correct?

I installed my rns510 to my ed30, oem aerial (which i meaning to change to a smaller 1 ) and sat nav works perfect. Make sure you get the GPS box which plugs into the rns510 then you just sticky tape it behind the rns510/dash.



Also you might need Vagcom to do some coding to make it work with your MFSW (if you have it).

As above. Make sure you get a standalone GPS receiver, it can be fitted under the dash, and no problems. Its probably not 15 minutes, more like 30-45 minutes with coding in VAG Com as well.

I would expect a dealer to milk it for 2 hours.

Id fit it yourself and get someone on here to sort the coding for you.

if you've got a vagcom cable it really is a piece of piss to do the 'coding'

first step is to tell the CAN gateway you've got a navigation unit installed....go into CAN gateway and tick 'navigation'....thats that done...


then go into navigation and code your navigation unit up for the options that you have such as cd changer, aux input, sound system etc etc and that really is it!

When I asked the dealer about head units for mine they said the newer ones wouldn't work and all I could go for was the Kenwood OEM style one.

It's probably because they don't know about retro fitting can gateways and gps receivers but also have to install everything as it would've left the factory

dealers are unaware that its possible to swap out a can gateway for one which supports newer style radios.... theres even a tool out there which makes it possible to flash the firmware on the actual CAN gateway to make older ones work like newer ones.... plus its easier for the dealer to sell you a kenwood one than to go through the whole hassle of a retrofit and provide the support for all that!

It will need coding to the car so it knows it has satnav

TBH i'm not too upto date with all the tech bits but mine was straight plug and plug. no coding required and the Nav picked up striaght away.

When i fitted my RNS510 it really did only take about 30 mins and it worked straight away without any coding with both my MFSW and dash centre display.
