Modified or Molested?....
« on: April 30, 2009, 10:12:47 am »
....

I have noticed the term "molested" quite a bit recently when referring to our beloved GTI's.

My interpretation of the term is that it's what someone calls a modified car that has gone beyond what they think is tasteful or acceptable to them. But, we each have our individual tastes and one of the many great things about this forum is that everyone seems to have a genuine respect for what others here do even if they don't like it themselves. So where is the line beyond which a car becomes molested rather than modified?

Molested is a negative term meaning abused or assaulted, so it's not really appropriate for those with totally unmodified cars to call any modified car "molested". "Totally OEM" or "totally unmodified" would be much friendlier terms.

There are those who genuinely think it wrong to modify a car and that, in our case, VW got it 100% right and we shouldn't interfere, but I disagree - VW and every other car manufacturer have to build to the lowest common denominator taking into account the rules and regulations in many different territories. There's no such thing as a perfect car except the one you build or modify for yourself.

Tacky chrome wheels with spinners, god awful interior (ala MK1 Focus RS) and oversized body kits still in primer!!! :rolleye:
Cheers,

Personally it is each to there own but there is a point were most common sense can tell it's gone to far but it does normally consist of looking like you've crashed in halfords and came out with every possible item lol
But am not too bothered I think we have a great scene oem+ euro track etc and not too many horrors
And if anything by what I've seen of the max power scene it's starting to jump onto the subtler stylin

And most important as mentioned I think this is by far the best forum with people having the right attitude

Sorry about that rant but am enjoyin writing on my new blackberry lol

Agreed :happy2:

Generalising, those across the pond in the U S of A seem to have a different common sense!

Shame you didn't do a damn fine job of spell checking before making the t-shirt...d'oh!

Theres a MK4 Golf around my way that the whole town laughs at...chrome 16" spinners, Escort Cosworth roof spoiler, "hungry fish" style front bumper and some god awful rear bumper with Heinz tins sticking out each side, I'd call it sacrilege.

I have some sort of "karma" when working on my car.  For everything I add, something has to come off.  If I find I'm adding more than removing, I feel I'm making the car too heavy and too cluttered.

....I didn't design or make that T-shirt and it's always slightly irritated me that someone couldn't be bothered to spell check, but I love the overall message.

Oooh... and to think the Red Modernator picked me up on Euphemism.... bloody cheek   :P He'll have an excuse, you see

For me, to "molest" a car means to go just that little bit too far, be it oversized spoilers or even something more subtle like slamming the poor car so far into the ground that you cant see the tops of the wheels. Just M.O
