As you can see from the responses it comes down to personal preference. I started off looking for a manual but after testing the DSG I went for that as the changes were so quick and smooth.

Best to try both and see what you prefer.

all the top 1/4 mile times are in DSG cars... so they're faster, cleaner and involving when you want, but easy when you need (i.e. motorway, traffic etc)

but for some, manual is still better? :stupid:

i get the personal choice thing, and i know mine is only an opinion, but unlike most discussions, where i can at least appreciate the other side (even if i don't agree with it), i can't at all fathom why anyone would choose a manual over the DSG. i'll never drive a manual again.

I bought a DSG because I like gadgets and at the time it seemed like a good idea.

At first I was impressed then it grated on me a little until I remembered the semi-auto function.

Flick to the left and all is forgiven.

I love it I would never go back.

This was confirmed after I drove a members manual Pirelli and realised that this car was designed for DSG.

And the 'pop' when you change with a full Milltek is sublime, its worth it just for that.

I just did not think that the manual gearbox does the MK5 GTI justice while the DSG certainly does.

I just wish that i just tried the DSG as i think i would have loved it but I didn't want to take the involveness of having a manual!

I have had 2 Audi TT's both DSG

Just bought a DSG mk5 and it better than I imagined.

All down to personal pref, just go and try both

My R32 was DSG, the current GTI is manual. I feel more 'connected' with the GTI. They are, however, two completely different cars and difficult to compare. But after driving the R with the paddles and in semi-auto I still found myself in D, cruising around and being lazy!

Test drive both and see what you think. Just check the changes on the DSG, make sure they don't clunk on downshifts into 4th/2nd. They are complex units and expensive to repair. There are some occurrences of failure though.

I've had manuals and DSG and to be honest the manual just takes the edge for me. The feeling of ultimate control just can't be replicated with DSG no matter what the DSG fanboi's say. Flicking a paddle with your finger is just not the same sensation as dumping the clutch and throwing back the gearstick!!

Yes DSG is quicker but it's also thirstier!!  :fighting:

with the DSG can you use the gear lever to change, (by nudging it forward or back)

Yes I am aware of this thanks. Still not the same as changing gear in a manual is it? Still no clutch and it's a very sterile push forward or back!  :confused:

It depends if you want to 'drive' your car or 'steer' your car! If I want to steer, I'll go to the funfair and have a go on the dodgems!  :signLOL:
