Dash mounting a portable GPS...

I'm thinking about taking out the indirect air vent on the top of the dash and replacing it with the oddments tray in some way to try and mount my portable Garmin GPS and fixing the power lead to it, dropping it down in side the dash.

Has anyone tried doing this or seen a kit for it? I know some manufacturers offer aftermarket kits to mount a satvnav in the oddments tray (BMW) and I think it looks quite tidy. Better than having it stuck to the windscreen at least.

Has anyone tried this or know of any problems?

In the middle of the oddment tray is the centre air duct, if you put the lead down to one side it would work a treat and tbh its better than having it stuck on the window

That's what I thought. I've seen a couple homemade for Skodas and the BMW aftermarket kit looks quite smart.

Was just wondering how I could attach the power lead to the oddments tray?

Not a GPS, but I've attached my PogoAlert that way:







I now have a new PogoAlert version but using the same cabling down behind the dash. The block is a receiver for something else unrelated.
I cut neatly the plastic so not to squeeze or force the connections - It would be a cheap part to replace if needed.



^ It's a good position to have such a device (providing it's not huge!) as it's directly in line with your vision while driving.
