Is it Factory fit or retrofit?

Have you done/tried anything such as a firmware update prior to it doing this?

sounds like its possibly just a loose cable...

how handy are you with a screwdriver?

pop over to halfords and pickup a T10 and a T8 screwdriver, all you gotta do is remove the two screws either side which hold the front panel on, remove and refit the white LCD ribbon which connects the front panel to the mainboard, this may fix it...

yeh I could do that defo :) so how do I go on with static on my hands do I need to wear gloves or is it safe? I take it the ribbon just pulls out and i just push it back in? or if it is that will it already be out? is there anything I should not touch or watch out for when taking the screen off?

thanks mate if it works you are number 1 in my eyes!! I will try it at the weekend  :happy2:

tbh, i never bothered with gloves etc...lol, if it really concerns you just discharge yourself (oo-er!) by touching a radiator pipe or something which is grounded and that should suffice

remove the four screws, the front panel should carefully move forward

if it doesnt you may have to remove the top plate (just 2 more screws on the top)

to remove the ribbon theres a very small strip of plastic across the top that you lift and the ribbon slides out, simple reinsert and carefully push that little piece of plastic back down - be gentle and dont force anything

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2009/11/17/fix-broken-keyboard-connector-on-laptop-motherboard/

the ribbon type uses the exact same kind of connector as a 'laptop keyboard connector', i've included a link to how to remove and replace one of those, should be straightforward to follow

good luck, and do post back how you got on with it  :happy2:

hi mate thanks for letting me know :( I'm still going try taking out the ribbon on Sunday see if that works (fingers crossed):)
if it ends up being the board £250 seems ok to get her back to life :) im sure all working it's worth £550 it's a version c. but let's hope it don't come to paying £250 as it's big pennies for job.

Hi mate

if it turns out to be the motherboard, dont scrap it...

i had my motherboard killed during a software update and i had everything inside it changed to Version H internals for the grand sum of £230, this was on top of what it cost to ship it to him in the czech republic, PM me and i'll send you his email address, guy really is absolutely amazing and comes with fantastic credentials - 'josi', 'peter_chicago' on the vwnavi forums all know him, i think the chap works for continental (the company that makes the units) he'll be able to fix your unit without any problems

but by the sounds of it yours may just be a loose cable!

good luck with the repair, feel free to PM me if you need any help!

I've just been emailed about a software update to the RNS510 Manager that I have and they mention a new feature -

Quote
LED backlight adjust and "black-screen-issue" tool

I wonder if it's anything to do with your issue?  I have emailed the company for more info.
