Hi mate you need to have it plugged in and then re gen it, tbh a long thrash on the motorway should put it in to re gen but as the light is now on it will more than likely have to be done with VCDS (although ive never re gend one with VCDS)

Fault code read and a lot more, if you own a VAG car then VCDS will become your best friend, it can code read, reprogram features, view live data, its close to main dealer diag tools

where abouts are you, there may be a member on here who is close by who can plug your car in

try doing about 60-65 mpg on the motorway in about 4th gear. basically you need the car's exhaust gases to be the hottest they can be. once they reach a certain temp..it will burn away the crap clogging the dpf.

In the 3 years I've had my golf, I've only seen the DPF light on once

As already said, you need to be doing motorway speed really to force a regen.

If this fails could be looking at new dpf, or dpf removal

You can remove them, ive never removed one completely, i have replaced them tho
A DPF is a silly idea tbh, but if you were to drive on say a motorway once a months that would do an auto re gen as the dpf will get to temp, im not sure where you could get a kit to remove it from my be darkside performance?

If you manage to get a full regeneration done, & you use the car to a point where the car can regenerate occasionally, you should be ok.

If you can't regen, you could replace the filter, don't know exactly how much, but I would imagine approx £900-£1000 genuine. Don't know if aftermarket are available.

OR

You could by a bypass pipe to replace the DPF. With this, you MUST have the DPF operation mapped out.

Where are you based?

If you wanted to get rid of the DPF, Miltek do a delete pipe. Mine is in for DPF delete next month.
