RNS510 SD Card Reading Issue
« on: February 23, 2012, 06:54:44 pm »
Guys,

I've come across a very strange issue with a Sandisk 8GB SDHC SD card that I've used with the RNS in anger for about 3 months now.

I've got a compilation folder with random songs in which I constantly update as I buy more mp3 music. I added a file to the folder recently and noticed it hadn't appeared. I re-read the contents of the SD card on my Dell Inspiron and verified it was there. I then copied the same file to several other folders and tried to read it again on the RNS. Sure enough, all copies of the file in each different folder were nowhere to be seen. This was just by turning the RNS510 on/off in the regular fashion, pushing the front facing power button.

I copied the contents to a folder on the Dell, formatted the SD card, re-copied the contents and tried again. Still no visual evidence of the song in the RNS file browser...
I tried creating sub folders, breaking the whole contents of the parent folder into three groups of songs (about 350 in total). I ended up with Parent folder, folder_2 and folder_3.

When browsing the SD card on the RNS, clicking into the root folder showed the songs in that, but no sub folders anywhere   :ashamed:
I moved them around and deleted the files out with empty folders and still no difference. Most bizarre.

I verified the file format of said file(s) and all were legit mp3 files, with no file formats that the RNS would cry about.

The strange thing is I copied the exact same contents to my Kingston Data traveler 4GB USB flash memory and using the Kufatec MDI lead, it shows everything and I can see/play all the files in the different three folders.

I moved the same file to it's own folder (only file in the folder) and it showed up fine, could read it and play it.
So when it resides amongst other files, it can't be read

Why would the RNS fail to read particular files within a folder on the SD card out of interest?

Thanks,
Pete.
Pete

Have you tried another card? It could be on its way out

Tried a 16GB SD card this time. Copied all the songs (259 in total) into one folder yet it only displayed the first 42 songs, this is a trend I saw in other folders on the other 8gb SD card too.

WTF is going on?  :stupid:

USB displays the songs across three folders happily. Is it an issue with the ability to read SD card files if you have more than xx volume? I think my RNS is an 'A' version, perhaps that's something to do with it?  :ashamed:

Maybe nail hit Alex with your Grade A/SD card comment. I'm on the latest as of September 2011, having visited Stu (vRStu) then, who kindly did a series of updates including firmware  :happy2:

Anyway, I solved it. I removed five or so of the songs after the first 42 (i.e. the 43rd, 44th... etc) assuming that one of them was stopping the others from being visible.
Sure enough, I put everything (ALL the songs, 250 odd) back into one folder on the root of the SD card, then put it back into the RNS.

This time, without the troublesome file (one of the five I removed, whatever the problem was) it displayed all of them and had a massive scroll bar - exactly what I was looking for

Cheers.
Pete
