Dipstick doofus?
« on: February 25, 2012, 07:01:36 pm »
I think i've been a right old doofus...

I checked the oil this morning, on level ground, cold engine. Dipstick showed oil level at about a 1/3 over min. Last time i checked a few months ago it was 1/2 so i thought i had better top it up. I topped it up with 250 ml then drove it 80 miles (no thrashing, very rarely hit 3k rpm in 3rd gear or above and never went near 4k). I let the engine cool and now the dipstick is reading that the whole of max is covered  :scared:.

Am i within a tolerance  that won't lead to frothing or Cat damage or have i been a proper dipstick and do i need to get some drained? (i'm guessing this could be likely as Max should mean Max).

Just to repeat - oil level was a 3rd on the dipstick and i put in 250ml - I guess i only needed to put in 100ml or less but should have done so in very small increments and kept checking the dipstick...  :sad1:

This is why VW recommend you don't fill more than halfway mark!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Wouldn't get too excited about it.  The TFSI engine is quite adept at reducing its own oil levels.  :rolleye:

That much oil won't do the slightest bit of harm. :happy2:

Thanks very much for all the replies and the reassurances - turns out i'm an even bigger doofus as i wasn't taking a correct reading of the dipstick - you see i never had a rag to clean it, replace and then check - i simply took it out saw it all over the dipstick and thought "Oh Fubar what have i done" I also did it whilst the engine was slightly warm (only let it cool didn't check when cold) and wasn't exactly level now i come to think of it :rolleye:

I properly checked it this morning and it is just a little above half way  :happy2: Panic over - and before anyone asks, no there isn't an oil slick beneath the car or in the engine bay :signLOL:
