Rear Seat belt Mechanism

The rear seat belt mechanism broke on my boys car (Mk4) and he has got another off e bay (after buying one the wrong colour!) and the belt will not pull out of the mechanism. Is there something that needs doing or is there a nack to getting it to pull out ?
