Which RNS 510 version?
« on: February 27, 2012, 02:47:06 pm »
Ok, my tomTom has just been bricked (latest update....stupid thing) :stupid: and I might just go for an RNS510.

Now my car is a 2007 - Golf GT Sport 170

No idea what CANBUS it has and no idea what version RNS 510 I should be looking at.

version A - the oldest? Any issues or features I need to know about?

Latest Version (F or H) - expensive....but any better than Versions A or B?

What about battery drain?
I have seen stuff about that on Google....given I don't know my CANBUS version, what should / can I do to ensure I don't get bothered with this unfortunate event?

Just looking into things, so any advice most appreciated ! :happy2:

Anyone confirm this?
Is there a cut off date?

That would be great as it has concerned me quite a bit  :scared:

I had a version B fitted to my 2007 Edition 30 yesterday by Golfman and we were told by Eddie-NL (who is something of an oracle on these things) that there should be no battery drain issues  :happy2:

Out of curiosity, what's happened to your TomTom? Is it a power/screen problem or corrupt software/SD card?
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Mine's a 54plate and i simply had a revised firmware loaded on my RNS510 ver C when Nick from R32OC supplied and fitted it for me,  and i have never had a battery drain issue, highly recommend getting one of these as they are so much better than a tomtom, which i used to use, pick up within seconds of turning on instead of sitting for 5 minutes sometimes waiting for satellites to be found  :fighting:

Best interior mod hands down and maybe of all

I updated it...file stopped loading half way through, said could not delete E:\data.chk
Now it won't even boot, gets stuck with the yellow screen which tells me it is loading from SD card but never does. If I reset (hold down power button for 20 seconds, I get a firmware type dos screen.

I have emailed TOM TOM but it is 3 years old now, so FUBAR'd ?

As for the RNS310, I think it is not Version (A B or C ) that is the issue for battery drain, I think it is the Firm Ware version that is critical?

Would appreciate an oracle point of view  :happy2:

If installing a RNS 510 with a software version more recent than 1200 or any other 3rd generation head unit the CAN Bus gateway needs to be revision L or greater. The gateway version can be identified by checking with VCDS or physically checking the gateway.

Early build Volkswagen cars can experience a power drain issue after upgrading their 2nd generation headunit from a RCD 300 or RCD 500 to a 3rd generation headunit like the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510.

The problem is the CAN bus Gateway is too old and an updated version 1k0907530 (1k0 907 530) of L revision or higher is required - CAN bus gateway removing, installing and upgrading – Volkswagen Golf.

Vehicles belonging to the model series PQ35/PQ46 from model year 2008 (MY08) as well as the Tiguan have gateways that are updated. Earlier models may require the updated CAN bus gateway to be installed. See Volkswagen Model Year Information for more details on the week of manufacture however generally Volkswagen change over Model Years around Week 22.

This problem does not* affect retrofits of the RNS 510 which is a 3rd generation head unit as this unit was in the production in 2007 whereas the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 are recent additions.

Check the ‘Skoda Parts’ link (right hand menu) for a reasonably priced gateway. Revisions that will work after the 1K0 907 530 S (1K0907530S) revision include 1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA), 1K0 907 530 AB (1K0907530AB) and 1K0 907 530 AC (1K0907530AC).

* This problem does now affect the RNS 510 if the firmware is upgraded to 2660 or higher. The RNS 510 will exhibit the same problems as the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 and requires the CAN bus gateway to be upgraded.

So in short I need to know my CANBUS version before I proceed??

Your RNS had a low firmware and is ok
If you upgrade the firmware it may well cause Battery Drain with the K version gateway you have

I always read the cutoff date was 56/late 2006/early 2007 for the battery drain issue?

see if you can get a VCDS scan to determine your can gateway revision

if i was you don't even bother with Version A/B, stick to a C or later version, preferably F/H

The A version cannot be updated to the newer firmware, C version has the nicer LED screen - quite a difference (I went from a rebadged A version to a proper F version and the difference is quite remarkable!)

the F version's are noticeably faster in use, including when navigating through the nav/media menus - i believe they had a faster processor than the previous versions

being able to install the later firmware means you can have the newer features such as POI on SD card, and more likely to be compatible with future map updates

Why not? There's a modified version that allows 38xx firmware to run on A/B/C units. I've got 3810 on my B unit.
