Dual zone climate control: Recircultation motor?

My car has the dual zone claimtronic system with digitial temperature selection.

I have had the ticking noice problem which I tracked down to being the recirculation flap motor.
While I was there, with the glove box removed, I noticed another flap, at the front of the intake duct, that seems to enable / disable air flow to the vents on the dashboard, but no buttons on the climatic control will operate the flap. CUrrently this flap is permanently closed.
When it is closed and recirculation activated, no air comes through the vents. Which is why I am questioning it.

Does anyone know what it is?

My brothers golf has normal heating system  (manual switches) and does not have this flap.



The motor that operates it is this one, fitted infront of the recirculation motor (black cogged motor):

The white cog is the recirculation motor (part no : 1K0 907 511 D)
The black cog is the motor in question (part no: TBC).

Any ideas what controls this? Maybe mine is faulty?

The front motor is part of the recirculation flap you press the recirc button and one flap opens the outside flap and the front motor opens the front flap that you can see,

On the newer golfs there is only one motor and a mechanism you push the recirc button and the motor and mech do the same has the early 2 flaps.

It looks like your front motor has give up the ghost

Ah, ok. Thanks for your reply.
That makes sense with 2 flaps.
Thing is, both motors have the same connector plug. If I connect the rear plug to the front motor it operates, so the motor works, just not when the Recirc button is pressed?
Also, my golf is 2006, my brothers is 2004, yet his has the single flap?
