i wonder if there is an optimum speed, accounting for the power graph/delivery vs air+rolling resistance....

mmm

Yes I'd like to know this too, even at 60mph I feel the car struggles to gently cruise as the rev is at3k rpm and that's turbo spinning level

maybe the 'best' speed is the slowest speed in 6th when the turbo is spinning
Standard: Rear parking sensors, Parrot Bluetooth

Mine managed 46mpg on a warm day driving from Cheshire to Newcastle at a steady 70mph. Sure that was on 95RON also  :P

I don't have the Ed 30 due to US BS ;( , but most of my mods have been an attempt to create my own.

I averaged 32.5 on a 750 mile trip. Not too good, right?

PS - I always get better mpg with my wife in the car too.. :happy2:

In the past, the figure of 56mph was bandied about as the optimum speed, but this is no longer applicable with modern cars. The turbo kicks in around 2000rpm, so you could argue that 6th gear at 2000rpm is best. Ironically, this works out to 56mph.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Most modern direct injection engines will get good mpg figures, my 135i (3.0 straight six twin turbo petrol) managed 42mpg recently (stage 1 tuned to 371hp and 385 ftlb) on a run from Sunderland to Newcastle. Not really trying to save fuel so 70mph all the way 20 mile trip.

However if you have some fun 10-12mpg is easily achievable  :sad1:

From what I've logged, when driving along on an economy run at or around NSL, on light throttle the manifold is generally seeing a vacuum. You only see boost if you accelerate or go up an incline. The turbo is always spinning, even on idle, just very slowly.
