Hello you lovely lot ive just bought my first golf gti the other day and thought to my self while i have some spare money ill treat my self to a fresh set of bbs ch's and eibach springs so booked it in to be done and about 2 hrs later i get a phone call saying that the steering wheel light has come on yellow on the dash board
so i argued that it wasnt there when i bought it in and the problem better be fixed so i refused to collect my car in tge mean time they have now told me that the steering rack toruqe sensor has gone and the whole rack has to be replaced at the cost of £800 ive been told by others that the early racks can be problematic so i guess thats one thing i dont have to worry my self about touch

Well that's the longest sentence I've ever read
What year is your car? Pretty bad luck if you've just bought it. Did you notice any signs of it being defective?

its a 2005. apparently the early racks suffer from this a lot. it happens alot when people lower there golfs for some reason
but i suppose ive had a touch because its being replaced for me free of charge HAPPY DAYS

I had a knocking from mine when on full lock. I did worry, having read various posts about failed racks, that mine would need doing. Luckily it ended up being the lower suspension bushes.

This happened to me.
A new rack would have been approx £850 plus fitting so i replaced with a good used one.
The yellow light came on (not red) and the fault code read thrust angle sensor G269. So i thought great i will just replace the sensor it cant cost that much.
how wrong could i have been!!
The sensor is a fairly common fault on early racks but cannot be replaced on its own
