snapped stud on exhaust housing on turbo.

as above. today i thought i would fit my decat bought from the for sale section. anyway undoing the 4 bolts on the turbo exhaust housing. got the top one and both the side ones out fine. jacked the car up to get to the bottom one. started turning it and it snapped the stud. i dont know why but everytime i do something on my car it never goes to plan. anyway now im left with 3 1/2 studs. anyone got any tips on how to remove the snaped stud.

It's not going to be easy and depends somewhat if you have much if anything of the stud sticking out.

You might find you'll need to take the manifold off to get better access.

If you've still got some stud on show then you could try some deep penetrating oil (leave it soaking for a bit) then anchor a pair of mole grips on and then try again

If there's no stud then you can get a sharp metal drill bit and start drilling the centre to shatter and remove it assuming you have the space, if not a dremmel earns its keep in situations like that

Worse case, weld...a weld blob on the surface can work wonders as it heats the stud and also gives you something to grip to turn if you build it up enough

iv got alittle bit stuck out bout 5mm. its going to be a nightmare. i think im going to leave anymore jobs to a mechanic. iv sprayed wd40 onit tonight. hopefully i can get it out 2mora. get the old gas bottle onit to warm it up nice and hot

You'll need to warm both surfaces not just the stud else the stud will expand and sit tight even more

I have seen a few tfsi's with snapped studs. None of them have had any issues with the flange sealing.

Remember to cover the entry into the turbo before you go about trying to remove it, dont want anything getting in the turbo.

Warm the flange not the stud and then grip the stud with mole grips it will come out easy mate, as above cover the turbo outlet

But some stud extractor bits which have reversed thread. Very easy to use but you need to have access to drill a hole

Penetrating oil and good externally gripping stud extractors have worked for me in the past. I've found with easy-outs I've generally sheared them before they start to shift the stud / bolt.

thanks for all your tips. im gona have a go out heating it up and trying some grips on it. if that doesnt work im goingto have to drill it. just hope it stops raining here.
