Replacement key

Just bought a new ED 30, but it only has one key. Now apart from the obvious question - where the hell is the other one, whats the best way of sorting a second keyfob and blade?

My wife's 08 company golf has 3 keys, so can i use her spare keyfob and clone it to my single keyfob or is that too easy?

I'd imagine your ED30 has the newer type of immo which is harder to code virgin keys with.

If your wife has three remotes then you remove the remote portion from one key and you could program it to open your car.
You could also have a clone of your blade cut (a guy on eBay does them from two clear photos for about £8 if you can't find someone local) but programming a chip to start the car is the hard part - this depends on what type of immo you have.

Maybe somewhere like Timpson could clone your working key cheaper than the dealer, although the latter would definitely do it.

Personally, I would get a second fully working key ASAP as it'd work out cheaper than accessing the car should you lose/damage your only key.
Even a non-remote one that starts engine - you could use one of your wife's fobs as the remote part and have them both on the same keyring, ugly but functional.

I think the simplest way is to buy the key directly from your VW dealer, they will order it from the Chassis Number and match it to the immobilisor.  Messing around with used/eBay key fobs is risky as there are cross brand restrictions etc.

I do however think that the eBay key cutters are quite good, I've used them for my fathers older Fabia a while ago.

No idea, I'd imagine it's well over £100 for them to supply and code it. Give some local dealers a call as the prices may vary.

I recently made a whole new key up on my wife's Altea and that cost me ~£40 (used remote from an older mk5 Golf, new blade cut to photo and new transponder chip) but I have the code to access the immobiliser, which I don't think is obtainable in your ED30 easily.

A figure of £120 sticks in my mind but it may be more expensive these days.

As Skard says if you had the SKC (Secret Key Code) it's easier, you can match a key with VCDS but you most likely don't have that and would find it difficult to obtain.

That's possibly about right then, £120 ish for the parts and the cost of the labour to match it.

I recently needed an extra fob for an Audi...the dealer suggested £180..

So, I sourced a good condition 2nd hand fob with matching part number on the bay for £11.....I had a blade supplied and cut by a local lock smith for £8 and had the fob matched to the car for £30 by a mobile auto key guy...

I agree it was a bit of messing around....but I just couldn't bring myself to pay main dealer prices...

If you do buy a blade off of ebay or elsewhere, many auto lock guys will not cut them, as the metal ruins their cutting tool.....for £8 all in I was happy to take their german sourced key blade....

Mine was £140 (x amount for remote and x amount for the blade) plus half hours labour for coding but that was a year ago

I spoke to VW and asked them if they could code a second hand key, parts guy said yeah.
So i bought a key off a chap on ebay (who later turned out to be an absolute tool, but thats another story) took it to VW and they could not code it, apparently according to VW transponders can only be coded once and CANNOT be re-coded.
I used the rear part of remote that I got from Eddie-NL on here and he coded it for me whilst he was fitting my cruise control.
I then bought the front part of the key (Blade and transponder) from VW for £68 (I think) and they coded it for me.

VW wanted £168.50 for the full key so you still save quote a bit doing it that way.

It's correct the transponders sit in the top part of the key and can only be programmed  once...the good news is they cost about £5 or less....

The other half of the key is the bit you have to get right and match to your car, as this is the remote locking and you can only match certain keys to the different ecus fitted to various cars.

Hickleys, eBay, maybe Timpson. I think in your case you're best getting it done at the dealer.

As for the remote part, if you get a used one that matches your existing one it should pair up to your CCM no problem.
