Hello from Scotchland - ED30 Owner
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:54:39 pm »
Good evening folks,

Done a bit of lurking over the past few weeks, and thought it about time I introduced myself.

Bought an Edition 30 in August of last year, after a few years owning a Mk5 GT TDI 140.  I got a job closer to home, so thought I'd ditch the diseasal, and get something with a bit of grunt!

The car is a 3dr, manual in Tornado Red.  No. 37.

Have to say I absolutely adore the car.  Easy to live with for every day driving, and power on tap whenever you sink the loud pedal!

I've been toying with the idea of a remap recently.  Problem is, I don't think I make use of all the power that is there often enough as it is.  But at the same time I think it will enhance the grin factor when I put the foot down.  Anyone want to convince me?

Got the timing belt replaced recently and the boy in the garage started talking about remaps, exhaust systems etc.  I thought those days were behind me, but we're still kids at heart aren't we...

Anyways, that's enough of my chat for now.  Look forward to catching up with you all.

Cheers.
G.

Welcome along buddy

Get the Stage 1 done, you will NOT regret it, I had mine done about a month ago and still haven't stopped grinning, but be warned once you start, you can't stop with the mods, I'm already eyeing up Stage 2 items for another hopeful 25bhp increase. The difference between std and stage 1 on the ED30 is immense, I've had many cars remapped in the past but none that have the dramatic effect that the ED30 unleashes once remapped.

Mines only a Superchips Bluefin remap which many reckon aren't as aggressive as say REVO but I am more than happy, better MPG too so what are you waiting for....

Enjoy it

What kind of increase did you see?  The guy at Star Performance (where I take it for any work) said I will see  between 280 - 300 with the remap, and better MPG.

I very rarely see above 27 MPG anyway with my 12 mile round trip to work and back!  You don't buy these things for the MPG though do you!

Most companies state 290-300, I beleive Revo are most aggressive maps, followed by APR (recently back in the UK market) and then other tuning companies such as Shark, R-Tech, Jabbasport etc.

My own car is going for stage 1 soon, just waiting to get the cambelt/waterpump done before I do it as thats due soon anyway, my own ED30 is going to Jabbasport in Peterborough (who reckon around 300 for stage 1), they did my 1.8T MK4 and was happy with service and the re-map plus its only a 94 mile round trip to them (rather than the 150 or 300 rround trips to Revo or APR, plus they only charge £420inc vat rather than £600  , I decided ultimately I will go stage 2 (TBE exhaust and Air Intake system) but thats as far as im taking it, no Intercoolers or Fuel pumps for me!, ultimately I am aiming for around 325-330bhp on stage 2 and will be happy with that (My MK4 was 203bhp and that was pretty nippy lol).

Jabba told me that mpg will increase maybe 1-2mpg on general driving and be roughly the same as now on gunning it.

Hmmmm.... descisions, descions!

I had my car in for it's timing belt and water pump last month as it's nearly turning 60k.  He told me at the time he would do the remap for £450 (usually £500) if I get it done at the same time as the other work, but I declined.  Hindsight is a wonderfull thing!

Do you not fear for your clutch after getting the remap, especially one like mine that has already seen 60k miles and umpteen gear changes?

Mines probably 290 ish bhp now, I don't know for sure and not one for bragging about increases but it is a different car, in fact half undriveable in wet weather  :driver: Its got the feel of an old school hot hatch now with too much power for the chassis almost. I know it sounds daft but I like it that way, it reminds you that you're driving something potent but I will be investing in a WALK kit in due course.

I've got a DSG gearbox in mine which isn't supposed to be troubled by increases as its rated at over 400bhp or so I'm lead to believe??? Not going anywhere near that and my cars done less than 10k miles so not too concerned. Think the clutch on yours should be ok? with the first state of tune although someone might be able to correct me on that. I know they need upgrading from Stage 2 upwards with close to 50% more power being put through.

Plenty of options for remaps, I paid £300 for a reset bluefin plug in flasher with the benefit of being able to remove the map for free or upgrade it in £50 steps so it suits me.

...in fact half undriveable in wet weather  :driver:

That doesn't bode too well for me considering my location!

Will do some more reading up on the subject to see what's all out there.  When I first got the car I thought I would keep it clean, drive it nice and look after it.  Then I thought to myself that the next owner would benefit from that more than me, so stuff them and bring on the mods!  :driver:

Cheers mate.

I have a friend with a standard GTI.  He's talking about getting his mapped, and I can't bare to listen to him talking about the difference it has made to him without getting mine done!
