Rear brake splash guard replacement, how to?

As per the title please chaps 

I need to replace both rear brake splash guards as they have both broken somehow and are catching on the discs, just wondering if anyone could confirm whether I need to remove the bearing/hub housing to replace the guards or whether it's simply a case of removing the caliper and disc?

Need to get the guards ordered up so unsure whether I'll need to order new bearings at the same time just in case, any help greatly appreciated as I've had the rent the missus a car so want to crack on

I know you can butcher the old splash guard off, but was wondering whether the new one will fit without having to remove the wheel bearing housing?

Would like to avoid the hassle and cost of potentially renewing the bearings if possible..

Pretty sure they can't be replaced without the hub being taken off, will see what ELSA Win says, give me 5mins

If you want to do the job properly you have to remove the hub.

If you want to do a quick job, you can cut the brace out and feed it past the hub.  I had to do this when I was the Guinea pig for S3 rears, and found that S3 Splash guards don't fit, hence the tweaking that all do now.

The pic shows the brace removed from the standard GTi/Ed30 Splash guard.

ive got a set of powder coated GTI back plates, they dont fit my TDI , they are held on by 3 torx bolts T30 iirc

I know when i up graded my rear brakes i had to cut the old guard of,when you order the plates get the bolts also

As QD said its hub off I'm afraid.

Also the R32 type don't fit as standard as obviously it's a 4wd hub!

On my Touran, which has the R32 all round, I just cut the old one off nice and neat, rightly or wrongly.

Seems i'll have to bite the bullet and pull the hubs  

Was hoping to avoid it as last time i did it on a mk4 the inner race stayed behind ruining the bearing, didnt want a repeat on the mk5 as the bearings are in otherwise great condition and adding £268 for a pair of bearings (VW prices) makes changing the guards bloody pricey!

Annoyingly i can't even order in the bearings till they are removed as thats the only way to confirm whether they are 30 or 32mm, grrr...

Bizarrely both my guards have cracked around the torx bit mounting holes causing them to flop around and hit the disc, both went on the same day?!

I have exactly the same problem but only one has gone on the back.  Was debating just removing them completely.  Presume there is no real harm in doing this?
