Lovely car, it looked brilliant in the coupe format, but the engine just felt really dead.

In standard form the 123d is far too smooth and refined, no urgency about the torque delivery like the 177hp 120d.

Yeah thats it Dave. It felt like driving a small petrol engine, not a 2L TDI with 2 turbos bolted on it. I excepted much more of a kick from the engine, but it just wasn't there. My ed30 whacks you in the back from 2500rpm.... 123d... no whack.  :signLOL:

I know what your saying, but that is kinda the point of the engine that it doesn't have that tdi feel of one big lump of torque.

I don't know about you guys, but I find the mission to replacing the GTI a f***ing nightmare.

It genuinely seems a hard task. I know many of you have second/third etc cars and many have replaced it, but I'm sure it wasn't easy - mind and heart.
It's of course just a Golf all things told but it's so much more to you as the owner when you live with it day in, day out.

Placing the same confidence in something else as well spec'ed, as practical, well built and as quick for sensible costs (+ that fits my preference) is just a mare'  :ashamed:

....Too right!!

The GTI truly is a great allrounder and a very hard act to follow. I've actually given up the idea of trading mine in....  Unless it's a straight swap for a Ferrari!

Mate that's the same feeling I got from the 330d, flat as fook !! :stupid: very unimpressed. I am considering an A3 Sportback S Line TDI ?  :signLOL:

A 123d after 3-4 hours of dyno tuning is a different matter though  much more urgency about it and feels so good to use the higher revs.

Same with the 330d:

For people contemplating a change from the GTI also look at the 335i as they are superb value at present, have a great auto box (manal also available) and as a package dont need much modding to be brilliant.

335D is on the 'to try' list too dave... they are about 280 stock. Do you map those too? What gains?

123d feels flat because of the two stage turbo and the way BMW map them, it's unusually linear for a derv - so the only indication of power is the needle heading into naughty figures very quickly.

A big hit of torque isn't a good idea in RWD.  :happy2:
Sideways yo!

Thats true and i suppose thats the reason it is that linear. The 1 series i drove looked superb, metallic grey and 18" twin spoke wheels, and all the gear inside. If felt more direct than the GTI, and felt lighter
