Transmission / Diff whine - manual box
« on: March 04, 2012, 11:25:15 am »
I've noticed I've got a whine on overrun, it's more noticeable when I go around roundabouts. It's a manual box by the way. Has anyone else noticed this on their car? Do you think an gearbox oil change would help reduce the whine any?

Are you sure its the gear.box and not a wheel bearing

I thought wheel bearing was more like a rumble? It passed its MOT back in July with no issues. Diff bearing maybe? Do you think an oil change will help?

My g/f car has a wheel bearing gone but has no play in the wheel, jack the car up and sit inside will some one spins the wheel and you might hear the noise,do this with every one first

Have you got a single mass flywheel fitted?  Or your dual mass may be on the way out causing extra transmission noise.

I notice a whine when speeding up/slowing down in 2nd/3rd and sometimes 4th gear. Nothing worryingly loud though, and I blame it on ebing over-sensitive since I came from a clattery diesel

Mine has a noticeable whine in the lower gears, more noticeable when its cold and its been doing it for the last three and half years so wouldn't be overly concerned unless something has just changed.

Yeah i'd say so, if you're in doubt, have the gearbox oil topped up/changed out. As long as the gears go in without crunching then I'd say all is well  :happy2:

Accelerating in 1st gear seems to be most noticeable to me...but as mentioned here, i wouldn't say it's anything to worry about as long as the gears don't clunk
